Can anyone explain that to me ?? 15 posts Doomguy Ars Scholae Palatinae Registered: Jun 30, 2000Posts: 839 Posted: Thu Aug 16, 2001 3:36 am System Specs----------------Inter 440LX motherboard with Award BIOS.Celeron 466 MhzUsing onboard IDE channels and NO SCSI devices.OS : Windows 2000 and Windows XP. There are some NTFS and some FAT32 partitions. I don't think that could affect the problem, but then I don't know much about "S.M.A.R.T.".The IDE Config.--------------------IDE0 Master : 6.2 GB Seagate Hard Disk IDE0 Slave : HP 8250i CDRWIDE1 Master : 17 GB Seagate Hard DiskIDE1 Slave : Creative PCDVD2 driveWhen I boot, my BIOS is now saying (started just today morning)that "IDE1 Master S.M.A.R.T. is BAD. Backup and Replace." During booting, the BIOS displays the system devices on the screen (only for a moment) and for all these months the hard disks were reported as "S.M.A.R.T. capable and enabled".I had read that SMART is a feature which predicts impending hard disk failures. So I have already backed up all my data from the 17 GB drive to another computer. My question is that the drive still works as usual, so how long before I come across some problems ?Also, does this mean that the drive will go 100% bad after some time or can I still use it then (maybe with bad sectors or after a full format) ?I'm quite surprised to find this because the 6.2 GB hard disk is much older but its well behaved. The 17 GB is relatively new ... also being seagate (whose hard disks' I've used for years) I didn't expect this. Anyway, the backups are done and I'm trying my best to analyse the problem and hopefully even try to save the disk (if possible). Thanks in advance for the helpDoomguy MartynS Seniorius Lurkius Registered: Apr 24, 2001Posts: 50 Posted: Thu Aug 16, 2001 4:44 am I don't think SMART has anything to do with how the drive is formatted. You could try changing it to another cable or IDE channel. Disabling SMART in BIOS should get rid of the error. As
