Hard disk error - Fail. Return Code 7 Posted by daveamazon on 2 May 2007 2:57 My dell hard drive diagnostics return code 4 Dimension 4700 stopped booting in Windows normal mode. In safe mode I was able to boot and ran a ChkDsk first thing. It showed 40 KB

in bad sectors on the hard drive but then the PC returned to booting normally (at least so far). I called Dell tech support anyway and he had me run the BIOS diagnostics for the hard drive. The result was: Fail, return dell hard drive diagnostics software code 7. The tech refused to send a replacement hard drive even though my Dimension is still under warranty. He said because I could still boot into Windows they would not replace the drive. He said I should back up my data and wait for the drive to fail completely before calling Dell again. This sounds crazy to me. I'm definitely backing up my data right now but how can I continue to use a PC with a hard drive that could fail again at any dell hard drive error code 2000-0142 moment. Does this sound right to anyone else? Thanks. Like 1 Reply You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. Posted by Noxo on 2 May 2007 3:22 Error code 7 doesn't mean that there is necessarily a hardware failure, it can be a problem with windows. My suggestion would be to do a pc restore after all of your info is saved, or re-install windows if that is not available. Posted by shesagordie on 2 May 2007 3:23 daveamazonThe Techie is wrong, the hard drive is failing, Error Code 7 means the drive has failed it's self-test and should be replaced.Try calling Dell again and give them the error code you received running diagnostics.Backing up your data, is a smart thinking.Bev.===================================================Please don't send me questions about your system by DCF Messenger.Post the issue in the appropriate Board, where they will be answered. IDE drive diagnostic error code 7& computer won't hard drive boot Started by Donna Gardner , Mar 20 2012 02:23 PM Please log in to reply #1 Donna Gardner Posted 20 March 2012 - 02:23 PM Donna Gardner New Member Member 1 posts we had a power outage & even though the computer was on a surge protected power strip now it won't boot it says "disk read error occured""press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" when I do it hust comes back with the same thing so while it's dell hard drive restarting it gives me the option to push F12 for the boot menu & that comes up so I tried 'IDE Drive Diagnostic' which then comes back with "Primary IDE drive 0: ST340014A-Fail. Return Code:7" is my hard drive gone? possible battery problem because this unit is always a half hour behind time. isn't there a dell reset to factory settings thing that you can do at that restart screen where I hit F12 & would that help? 0 Advertisements #2 eyetripoli Posted 20 March 2012 - 05:21 PM eyetripoli Member Member 18 posts Donna, What Dell model computer do you have? What operating system are you running? XP? Vista? 7? That hard drive diagnostics code indicates a failing drive but it really doesn't say anything specific. I would advise running a Hard Drive diagnostic tool to better assess the drive's health. Do you have access to another computer to burn a CD? If so, download Seagate SeaTools and burn the ISO (.iso) to a blank CD and run a HDD test. http://www.seagate.c...000dd04090aRCRD I would also like to say that not all power strips protect against power surges effectively. It is very possible for a power surge to fry single or multiple components in a computer. Hopefully we can get it figured out. ~ieee Edited by eyetripoli, 20 March 2012 - 05:26 PM. 0 #3 123Runner Posted 2

ByAngoos Sep 20, 2007 Hi Guys, Let me start by warning you that I am not a whiz when it comes to computers! My Dell Dimension 4600 has been getting a little cantankerous of late, to the point where it failed to boot up today (I'm on the laptop!). I've looked for solutions, and the end result after getting a "blue screen" with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" message is the following: IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics Primary SATA Drive 0: No device Secondary SATA Drive 0: No device Primary IDE Drive 0: WDC WD600BB-75CAAO - Fail. Return Code: 7 Drive 1: Maxtor 6E040l0 - Pass etc... Is this the dreaded hard drive crash? Any advice gratefully received! Angoos Sep 20, 2007 #1 AlbertLionheart TechSpot Chancellor Posts: 2,026 It is either a dead hard drive or the motherboard has stopped talking to it. My bet would be the drive, given the symptoms. Posts: 6,000 +15 Your drive is dead or dying. Most drives carry a 5 year warranty. I hoped you backed your data up. Sep 20, 2007 #4 Angoos TS Rookie Topic Starter Thanks for the replies. Incredibly (for me!) I managed to get the old girl up and running in Safe Mode, and while there appears to be one or more errors on my C hard drive, everything appears to be operating normally ... My next question is: Should I replace the hard drive anyway - it must be about 4.5 years old? And when buying a replacement hard drive, is there anything I should look for? Cheers. Angoos Sep 20, 2007 #5 AlbertLionheart TechSpot Chancellor Posts: 2,026 Before you do ANYTHING, back up your files. Then, if you have any doubts about the drive's reliability, replace it. If it is of an age it will be an IDE drive so replace it with another IDE drive (not SATA) of the same size or bigger. Sep 21, 2007 #6 (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)
