He has a Dell desktop, and was performing a regular Windows update when his computer froze in the middle of the update. When he rebooted, it said that the computer was unable to boot from the drive. The computer would not boot up in safe mode either. I asked him to run a Hard drive diagnostic test, which returned that the hard drive failed the test, return code 7. After some research, it seems to me that this error is not fixable, and he must buy a new hard drive. Is this true? The report came back with WDC WD800JD-75MSA3-Fail Return code 7. I take it that that means the hard drive might be shot or have bad sectors. My question is can this be repaired by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows? OS= Windows Home Edition Thanks in advance for any help. And failed harddrives cannot be fixed by reinstalling the OS. You need to buy a new drive. Any recommendations on a 80gb or larger hd that would be fairly reasonable in price? Also SATA vs ATA drives, I'm assuming SATA is better.
