Please share the System Model and Operating System installed. Also run diagnostics to confirm hardware functionality. Here are the steps: Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'. Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key. The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen. Please reply with the information, I'll be happy to assist further. Power on/Restart the computer and then start tapping the F2 key when Dell Logo appears, the machine will enter System Setup. 2. On the first page that appears see if there is a Hard Drive listed next to Fixed HDD. 3. If the Hard Drive is not listed press F9 key and Load the BIOS Defaults and then restart the computer. 4. If you again get the Hard Drive not detected message, take a technician's help to reseat the Hard Drive(if you wish to do it yourself you can refer to the service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sm/pdf/om_en.pdf) 5. After reseating if the Hard Drive is not detected again, you need to replace the Hard Drive. 6. When you power it up the HDD makes a noise (like the hard drive is straining to work) for a short while and then you get a message: "internal hard disk drive not found, to resolve this issue try to reseat the drive" I did reseat the drive and the problem still persists. I entered ePSA and ran diagnostic and the HDD is not detected. I assume, then, that the HDD has been damaged and is irreparable. Unless someone in here has another idea, I am going to suggest installing a new HDD and install the OS. My other "dumb" question is, will the client have to purchase a new Windows 8 license to install on the new HDD? Assuming the motherboard is OK, should not need to purchase a license. The keys are supposed to be built into the bios. If it was windows 8 you can actually install Windows 8.1 with a generic key and use a key reader to read the key from the bios, and then activate the windows 8.1 install with that key. Do some searching but I think there are some guides on the forums that show how to do this. #2 ohio_grad_06, Apr 23, 2015 jkurgeek likes this. jkurgeek Expand Collapse Member Likes Received: 20 Location: NJ Yes, the hard drive needs to be replaced. Install Windows 8.1 with this generic key: 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT Once installed, you can use Produkey from www.nirsoft.net to pull the BIOS key and activate Windows. Since the system was dropped, a thorough diagnostic and visual inspection would also be a good idea to cover
