Linux Check Hard Drive Smart Status
article, we will show you some Linux disk utilities to diagnose the health of your hard disk. Image by Scoobay S.M.A.R.T System Most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks have a Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) system. SMART hard disks internally monitor their own health and performance. The SMART tool assesses the condition of your hard disk based linux check hard drive model on: the throughput of the hard disk, the seek errors rate of the magnetic heads, and other attributes that your hard disk manufacturer built into their hard disk. Most implementations of SMART systems allow users to perform self-tests to monitor the performance and reliability of their hard disks. The simplest way to perform a SMART system test with Ubuntu is using the ‘Disk Utility' under the ‘System' > ‘Administration' menu. The disk utility lets you see the model, serial number, firmware, and the overall health assessment of the hard disk, as well as whether a SMART system is enabled on the hard disk. The ‘SMART data' button lets you see the SMART features of your hard disk. The ‘Run Self-test' button lets you initiate a short, extended, or a conveyance self-test on the hard disk. When you execute these tests, you'll see a progress meter, letting you see how far through the test is and what the estimated time of completion is. The ‘Attributed section' lets you see the errors and self-test information. File System C

How can I test if linux check hard drive speed my hard disk is going bad? I see few errors in /var/log/messages file.I/O errors linux check hard drive activity in /var/log/messages indicates that something is wrong with the hard disk and it may be failing. You can check hard linux check hard drive usage disk for errors using smartctl command, which is control and monitor utility for SMART disks under Linux / UNIX like operating systems. smartctl controls the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) system built http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/37659/the-beginners-guide-to-linux-disk-utilities/ into many ATA-3 and later ATA, IDE and SCSI-3 hard drives. The purpose of SMART is to monitor the reliability of the hard drive and predict drive failures, and to carry out different types of drive self-tests.smartctl for serverssmartctl is a command line utility designed to perform SMART tasks such as printing the SMART self-test and error logs, enabling and disabling SMART automatic testing, and initiating device self-tests. http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-find-out-if-harddisk-failing.html First, make sure S.M.A.R.T. support is enabled in the BIOS. Next, run the following command to see if your hard disks support S.M.A.R.T technology or not: # smartctl -i /dev/sdb To enable SMART, run: # smartctl -s on -d ata /dev/sdb Sample outputs:smartctl version 5.33 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF ENABLE/DISABLE COMMANDS SECTION === SMART Enabled.Run overall-health self-assessment test, enter: # smartctl -d ata -H /dev/sdb Sample outputs:smartctl version 5.33 [x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSEDA sample output from failing hard disk:smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED Please note the following marginal Attributes: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 044 033 045 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 56 (96 110 58 25)The following will provide even more information about failing hard disk: # smartctl --attributes --log=selftest /dev/sda Sample outputs:smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF READ SMART DATA SEAugust 29, 2015 badblocks is the command or utility in linux like operating system which can scan or test our hard disk and external drive for bad http://www.linuxtechi.com/check-hard-drive-for-bad-sector-linux/ sectors. Bad sectors or bad blocks is the space of the disk which can't https://mintguide.org/system/283-how-to-check-and-fix-the-disk-for-errors-and-bad-sectors-in-linux-mint.html be used due to the permanent damage or OS is unable to access it. Badblocks command will detect all bad blocks(bad sectors) on our hard disk and save them in a text file so that we can use it with e2fsck to configure Operating System(OS) to not store our data on these damaged sectors. hard drive Step:1 Use fdisk command to identify your hard drive info # sudo fdisk -l Step:2 Scan your hard drive for Bad Sectors or Bad Blocks # sudo badblocks -v /dev/sdb > /tmp/bad-blocks.txt Just replace “/dev/sdb” with your own hard disk / partition. When we execute above command a text file “bad-blocks” will be created under /tmp , which will contains all bad blocks. Example : Step:3 Inform check hard drive OS not to use bad blocks for storing data Once the scanning is completed , if the bad sectors are reported , then use file “bad-blocks.txt” with e2fsck command and force OS not to use these bad blocks for storing data. # sudo e2fsck -l /tmp/bad-blocks.txt /dev/sdb Note : Before running e2fsck command , you just make sure the drive is not mounted.
