I took the hard disk drive out and put one in out of another computer I have and it reports the same error, but when I put it back in the other computer the hard drive is smart hard drive fine. So I am wondering is it my motherboard or some other problem. I've also swapped out the ram, same error. It is a compaq presario x1000 laptop. It was bought at a work auction for next to nothing, but I would like to get it working for the kids. That might be the culprit since a perfectly working drive from another system reports the same error when connected. Try the original drive in your other system and see what diagnostics reports on the drive. I recommend downloading and burning to CD a bootable ISO of hard drive diagnostics tool from the maker of the hard disk. Then boot off the CD to run the diagnostics.
