He has a Dell desktop, and was performing a regular Windows update when his computer froze in the middle of the update. When he rebooted, it said that the computer was unable to boot from the drive. The computer would not boot up in safe mode either. I asked him to run a Hard drive diagnostic test, which returned that the hard drive failed the test, return code 7. After some research, it seems to me that this error is not fixable, and he must buy a new hard drive. Is this true? I have read a few forums that mentioned "chkdsk /r" could solve the problem, but only temporarily to recover data. If chkdsk works, how is it done when the computer will not boot? Any h

The report came back with WDC WD800JD-75MSA3-Fail Return code 7. I take it that that means the hard drive might be shot or have bad sectors. My question is can this be repaired by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows? OS= Windows Home Edition Thanks in advance for any help. Any recommendations on a 80gb or larger hd that would be fairly reasonable in price? Also SATA vs ATA drives, I'm assuming SATA is better. ByAngoos Sep 20, 2007 Hi Guys, Let me start by warning you that I am not a whiz when it comes to computers! My Dell Dimension 4600 has been getting a little cantankerous of late, to the point where it failed to boot up today (I'm on the laptop!). I've looked for solutions, and the end result after getting a "blue screen" with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" message is the following: IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics Primary SATA Drive 0: No device Secondary SATA Drive 0: No device Primary IDE Drive 0: WDC WD600BB-75CAAO - Fail. Return Code: 7 Drive 1: Maxtor 6E040l0 - Pass etc... Is this the dreaded hard drive crash? Any advice gratefully received! Angoos Sep 20, 2007 #1 AlbertLionheart TechSpot Chancellor Posts: 2,026 It is either a dead hard drive or the motherboard has stopped talking to it. My bet would be the drive, given the symptoms. Incredibly (for me!) I managed to get the old girl up and running in Safe Mode, and while there appears to be one or more errors on my C hard drive, everything appears to be operating normally ... My next question is: Should I replace the hard drive anyway - it must be about 4.5 years old? And when buying a replacement hard drive, is there anything I should look for? Cheers.
