05/06/2015Share onFacebookGoogle+TwitterPrint I had the misfortune to find out, not long ago, that a computer owner's worst nightmare is a failing hard disk drive. Not because of the need to buy western digital hard drive test a new one, but because you will face the risk of

losing part or even all of your stored data. Moving on from the initial apocalyptic view, as the hdd test tool life expectancy of a hard drive is between 3 to 5 years, it is necessary to check its health on a regular basis. So I propose a short http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility analysis which includes several programs that you can use to analyze your HDD. Let's get started. S.M.A.R.T. & It's Role In Checking The Health Of Your HDD S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is the embedded monitoring system of any modern HDD or SSD, but, unfortunately, it only lets itself be known to us when an imminent hardware http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-test-health-your-hdd-drive failure is possible. That seems to be a little late. Still, luckily for us, there are a series of utilities that can read the various reliability indicators used by S.M.A.R.T. Nevertheless, all major HDD manufacturers recommend an occasional check of your disk status, as well as running a few surface tests and benchmarks. Any version of Windows has the Check Disk tool that is a fairly simple way of caring for your hard disk and identify errors, but it usually seems to be of little help in identifying hardware failure. There are many free testing tools to help us predict and protect ourselves from these unavoidable circumstances of a hard drive failure. Still, I propose using one of these free third party diagnostic tools: PassMark's DiskCheckup, CrystalDiskInfo and/or HDDScan. All these utilities incorporate the built-in S.M.A.R.T feature mentioned above that helps them give information on read and write speeds, HDD temperature and other important indicators of disk reliability. Even if you may have heard of some of these tools before, I’m confident that you’ll find hard drive a gem or two among this list. 1. TestDisk TestDisk allows you to repair boot sectors, recover deleted partitions, fix damaged partition tables, and recover deleted data, as well as copy files from deleted/inaccessible partitions. It works on a number of different file systems including FAT/NTFS/exFAT/ext2. Note: Bundled with TestDisk is a companion application called PhotoRec. PhotoRec recovers photos, hard drive test videos and documents from different storage media by going beyond the file system and looking for specific data blocks (i.e. clusters) belonging to the missing file(s). When you first run TestDisk you are asked to choose whether you want a log file to be created. You are then given a list of partition table types to choose from (this will allow the application to use the correct signature when reading the partitions on all available disks), before being presented with a list of available hard drive partitions to perform a selected action on. The choice of actions you can perform on each partition include: (1) analysing the partition for the correct structure (and repairing it accordingly if a problem is found) (2) changing the disk geometry (3) deleting all data in the partition table (4) recovering the boot sector (5) listing and copying files (6) recovering deleted files (7) creating an image of the partition 2.
