from the very simple (hopefully says you!) to the long and somewhat difficult. See the solutions below for more. Solution 1 - Set Your SATA Controller to Compatability/IDE/Standard Mode Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section I've seen this section called ‘On Chip Config' on some Phoenix Award BIOS On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it's in Config > Serial ATA (Sata) Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility Save & Exit Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again. If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup. When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS If your problem still exists after changing this option then change it back to AHCI and proceed to Solution 2 below. Solution 2 - Load your SATA drivers using a Floppy Disk (or CD) UPDATE JAN 2011 - Create A Custom Windows XP CD with your SATA drivers as an alternative to using a floppy disk. Power on/Restart the computer and then start tapping the F2 key when Dell Logo appears, the machine will enter System Setup. 2. On the first page that appears see if there is a Hard Drive listed next to Fixed HDD. 3. If the Hard Drive is not listed press F9 key and Load the BIOS Defaults and then restart the computer. 4. If you again get the Hard Drive not detected message, take a technician's help to reseat the Hard Drive(if you wish to do it yourself you can refer to the service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sm/pdf/om_en.pdf) 5. After reseating if the Hard Drive is not detected again, you need to replace the Hard Drive. 6. If the Hard Drive is listed in Step 2, run Dell 32 bit Diagnostics on the machine (for more details on how to run the diagnostics check the User's Manual page 64: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sg/sg_en.pdf) 7. If the diagnostics comes up with an error code, do reply to this post with the exact error code you get. Please do write back to us. The problem that people hard drive keep running into left and right is getting to the point where XP starts to install and getting the message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". This error happens because your new computer has astorage controller that isn't supported natively in XP, usually an SATA (Serial ATA)controller. If you don't have a floppy drive in your computer (who does anymore), then you'll need hard disk not to use a process called slip-streaming to integrate the storage drivers into your XP installation CD. It should go without saying that this is an advanced topic, so proceed with caution. Creating a Custom XP Install We'll use a software called nLite to create a new XP install cd, so you'll first need to download and install it. Once it starts up, you'll be prompted for your Windows installation, so you'll want to click the Browse button. First you'll be prompted for the "Windowsinstallation", which really means your XP install CD. Find it and select the root of the installation, and then click OK togo to the nextdialog. Next you'll be prompted on where you want to save the temporary files used during the slip-streaming process. I chose to create a new directory and called it XPISO, but you can put it wherever you'd like. I just recommend to use a new directory. nLite will copy all the necessary files off the XP installation and into the temporary folder. When it's done, you'll see all the information on which version it is. Hit the next button until you come to this screen, where you can select what options you want. Select "Drivers" an
