By todd.sutherland · 9 years ago I've been getting the classic 'blue screen of death' lately regarding a drive operating outside normal parameters. I own a Dell and upon startup have run Dell's IDE drive diagnostics http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/discussions/hard-drive-beginning-to-go/ and get the following result:Primary IDE Drive 0: -Fail. Return Code:4Now I know this can't be good but was curious as to what 'return code 4' means and if there is anything at all that I can do. Surprisingly I can still get into windows, but performance is way down and when left unattended upon my return the friendly blue screen error message is back. Other things that clue me in to my hard drive going is that I am beginning to hear intermittent 'clicking' and abnormal noises from my computer. Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Diagnostics tell me hard drive 0 Maxtar (some number) - Fail hard drive - return code: 7. At the moment it is performing a chkdsk /r. The drive is SATA. Not being real familiar with them is this legit? Or is my Dell script reader just trying to not send a hard drive that will fail in time wheather this repair works or not? Thanks. Tell them out of a hunch you ran a 90/90 again and this time it reported a CODE 4. That's going to be an automatic replacement. If they insist that it's not a hardware failure, demand a Supervisor and accept nothing less than a replacement hard drive. If not, make a date with Dell in a few months while you still have them on the phone, because you'll be calling them again before you know it for the same issue (happens all the time...). It is a hardware failure. CHKDSK /R will recover bad sectors and you may be able to get your data off of the drive, but it is a software solution that repairs the file system and relocates data out of the bad
