Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement davmar57 Thread Starter Joined: Jul 28, 2008 Messages: 11 When booting my HP Pavilion A1410N desktop PC (windows XP), I get a screen with a message saying something like "We apologize, but we cannot boot your PC...may be a recent hardware or software change". If I let it go, it keeps trying to reboot and coming back to the same screen. I was able to run some tests and got the following error code: HD521-2W. Some other highlights: - Hard drive: Samsung SP2004C - Self test status: 7 (completed with the read element of the test failed) - Passed the CPU & Memory test, but got the HD521-2W error code with the other tests, including the 'short self-test' - 2 days before problem, uploaded an HP upgrade. - 1 day before problem, got a 'possible worm' message from McAfee. Ran their diagnostics and it came up with 1 possible problem file but nothing 'serious'. - Wasted $50 talking to HP help desk yesterday. They told me I need a new hard drive, but it seemed the guy was just reading a manual, and just took some basic steps before telling me it must be the hard drive. I'd sure like to be able to fix the problem without losing data on my hard drive. I lost most of the programs that I had loaded onto the computer - but just reloaded those from the disc." My question is how that's done. I have the recovery HP discs...do they give you the option to do a recovery without losing data? davmar57, Jul 29, 2008 #3 davmar57 Thread Starter Joined: Jul 28, 2008 Messages: 1
