I want something that will be able to run some simple tests to ensure there are no bad sectors or read/write errors, as well as check the SMART status. What software is popular for this today? Its been a long time since Ive had to run any HDD tests. Also, whatever software you recommend make sure its free because I'm kinda broke right now More about : hdd diagnostic testing utility Reply to dopey117 JackNaylorPE a c 181 G Storage 9 April 2012 04:08:09 SpinRite is what I have always used tho I don't think I have needed to use it since 2006 or so....but it's not free. http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm Other than that, the manufacturers own free diagnostic tools (available on their web sites) should suffice. http://www.seagate.com/www/http://support.wdc.com/produ... http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=6&la... http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/ Reply to JackNaylorPE m 1 l Best solution Ubrales a c 155 G Storage 10 April 2012 07:23:22 A couple of free ones: 1) Crystaldiskinfo - http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-... 2) HD Tune - http://www.hdtune.com/ Reply to Ubrales Share Related resources Good HDD Diagnostic Utility? - Forum what's the best (paid or free) diagnostic tool for HDD and SSD? - Tech Support HDD testing utility? - Forum Free Hard Disk Drive Benchmark/Diagnostic Utility - Tech Support Which EXTERNAL HDD works best with Win7 Pro BACKUP Utility? - Forum Can't find your answer ? Even if you http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-disk-health-monitoring-utility.htm may have heard of some of these tools before, I’m confident that you’ll find a gem or two among this list. 1. TestDisk TestDisk allows you to repair boot sectors, recover deleted partitions, fix hard drive damaged partition tables, and recover deleted data, as well as copy files from deleted/inaccessible partitions. It works on a number of different file systems including FAT/NTFS/exFAT/ext2. Note: Bundled with TestDisk is a companion application called PhotoRec. PhotoRec recovers photos, videos and documents from different storage media by going beyond the file system and looking for specific data blocks (i.e. clusters) belonging to the missing file(s). When you first run hard drive error TestDisk you are asked to choose whether you want a log file to be created. You are then given a list of partition table types to choose from (this will allow the application to use the correct signature when reading the partitions on all available disks), before being presented with a list of available hard drive partitions to perform a selected action on. The choice of actions you can perform on each partition include: (1) analysing the partition for the correct structure (and repairing it accordingly if a problem is found) (2) changing the disk geometry (3) deleting all data in the partition table (4) recovering the boot sector (5) listing and copying files (6) recovering deleted files (7) creating an image of the partition 2. EaseUS Partition Master Free EaseUS Partition Master Free is a partition manager that allows you to resize, move, merge or split paritions, convert disks, recover deleted or lost partitions, check the partition for errors, migrate the OS to another HDD/SSD, perform disk defragmentation, and more. When you launch EaseUS Partition Master Free, use the operations listed on the left hand pane or the top menu to perform an action against the selected partition(s). 3. Not all hard drive crashes are random, so you may have time to backup your data before it fails completely. All modern drives have a monitoring technology called S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) that continuously monitors a number of parameters on a hard drive. Many parameters can be monitored by S.M.A.R.T. including read and write error rates, seek error rates, spin up time, temperature and much more. To effectively warn you when certain parameters are degrading or reaching their threshold you need a program that can track these changes and show them to you. Allowing you to test and see whether a hard drive is capable of storing your data safely, giving you time to backup your important files and start looking for a replacement drive should you need to. A monitoring program alone is not fully capable of showing you whether the integrity of your files can be maintained on a particular hard drive. It's a good idea to scan for bad (unreadable) blocks of data with either HDDScan or HD Tune at least once a month to ensure your drive is not degrading and data isn't being lost.
