Power on/Restart the computer and then start tapping the F2 key when Dell Logo appears, the machine will enter System Setup. 2. On the first page that appears see if there is a Hard Drive listed next to Fixed HDD. 3. If the Hard Drive is not listed press F9 key and Load the BIOS Defaults and then restart the computer. 4. If you again get the Hard Drive not detected message, take a technician's help to reseat the Hard Drive(if you wish to do it yourself you can refer to the service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sm/pdf/om_en.pdf) 5. After reseating if the Hard Drive is not detected again, you need to replace the Hard Drive. 6. If the Hard Drive is listed in Step 2, run Dell 32 bit Diagnostics on the machine (for more details on how to run the diagnostics check the User's Manual page 64: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/insN5110/en/sg/sg_en.pdf) 7. If the diagnostics comes up with an error code, do reply to this post with the exact error code you get. Please do write back to us. Hard Disk Not Detected In Bios
for the first time. The motherboard is an Asus P6X58D-E, and the hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB drive.
External Hard Disk Not Detected
The computer appears to boot up correctly, but when the BIOS page comes up, it can't detect the hard drive, and so I'm not allowed to enter set-up, and I get the error message "reboot and select http://ccm.net/forum/affich-672388-no-hard-drive-detected proper boot device." The hard drive is a SATA drive, and the motherboard only seems to support SATA connections. I've tried using different SATA cables, and re-connecting the power cable, and plugging the drive into different SATA connectors (including SATA1) to no avail. The hard drive light comes on for a second during boot-up, so it seems to be getting power correctly. The SATA DVD drive is working properly (not that I can do http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/285752-31-hard-drive-detected much with it without the hard drive). Is there an easy way to tell if I have the hard drive set up incorrectly, or if it's just perhaps bad? Thanks for any help. If you just go through the boot process, you will get this error since you have no OS installed. Have you gone into your BIOS to see if it is showing your hard drive?? m 0 l SWCarter 6 May 2010 13:17:03 Well, that was confusing. I thought because the boot-up process was reporting that it couldn't detect a hard drive, that meant I couldn't install anything, including Windows 7. But now I've installed the OS, and I've checked the BIOS set-up and it lists the hard drive, and everything seems to be working fine -- except that for some reason the boot-up process is still reporting that it can't detect a hard drive. Is that important if everything seems to be working? Thanks for your help. The one you got is a good drive from a reputable source? Any chance you could try the drive on another computer? Check all connectors to be certain that they are properly cabled and firmly seated. make sure that your cable is not reversed. Make sure that you matched the colored strip on the cable with pin 1 on the drive. Let us know if that made a difference and if all connections are the way they are supposed to be.
