the video format is not supported? Even though Windows Media Player has built-in support for playing AVI files, you can still run into problems. In this article, I'll talk about https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/279242 the reasons why an AVI video may fail to play and what you can do to fix the issue. Understanding AVI Format The first thing you need to understand about AVI, aka Audio Video Interlaced, is that it is a very old container format created by Microsoft in 1992. This means that an AVI file contains audio and video data streams that can http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/cannot-play-avi-files/ be played together in sync. This is important because the format for the audio or video stream can be different inside the AVI container. For example, the video stream could be compressed using the DivX, Xvid, H.264, VP9 or MPEG-4 codec. If your AVI file contains a video stream that uses a more modern codec for compression, Windows Media Player may not be able to play it because it can't decompress that particular codec. You basically have four solutions to this problem: use a newer version of Windows Media Player, convert the video to another format like MP4, WMV, etc., install the necessary codecs on your system so that Windows Media Player can decompress the video stream or use a different media player like VLC, which already supports pretty much every codec out there. For an in-depth understanding of all this, check out my guide to codecs, container formats and transcoding. Newer Version of WMP Depending on which version of Windows you are running, you might be able to fix your problem by simply upgrading Windows, which will give you a newer version of WMP

Codecs are important in the Windows Media Player world because you need a codec to translate different kinds of media files into data that WMP can understand. A codec (short for coder-decoder or compressor-decompressor) is a small program that converts data from one form to another. Unfortunately, filename extensions don't tell the whole codec story. For example, WMA files can have a WMA 7, WMA 9.2 or WMA 10 format. It's up to Windows Media Player (or Winamp, which also plays WMA files) to look inside the file and decide which format was used to create the file. After the determination has been made, WMP (or Winamp) hauls in the right codec to decipher the file. You don't need to lift a finger. Sometimes, though, Windows Media Player doesn't have the correct codec on hand to play a particular file. For example, AVI is a popular file format that can be created using a particular kind of video-encoding technique called DivX. Although DivX files are gaining in popularity, Windows Media Player still doesn't include its codec. So, in order to play a file using this format, you need to install a new codec. 1Double-click a video or audio file. When you try to play a media file that WMP doesn't understand, WMP helps you find the codec. In this case, WMP can't find the codec necessary to play The Cabinet of Dr Caligari_xvid-belos.avi, so it
