403 Forbidden errors. Symptom You get the following error when you try to visit a web page: Figure 1. Causes and Solutions There are three common causes for this error. Here they are listed from most likely to least likely. Empty html directory Empty httpdocs directory Make sure that your website content has been uploaded to the correct directory on http error 401 your server. And that’s just it: it’s for authentication, not authorization. Receiving a 401 response is the server telling you, “you aren’t authenticated–either not authenticated at all or authenticated incorrectly–but please reauthenticate and try again.” To help you out, it will always include a WWW-Authenticate header that describes how to authenticate.
