For example, Amazon employs approximately 15,000 robots across 10 fulfillment centers within the United States, eliminating the need for humans to do this work. The oil refinery strike in Texas is considered to be ineffective because automation has allowed oil companies to continue operations despite the shortage of workers. These are just a few examples demonstrating the power automation has in simplifying and eliminating manual tasks in the workplace. In the laboratory, automation is also impacting operations by reducing manual tasks such as sample preparation, experiment execution and even results analysis. However, even with these advances in automation, there are still plenty of opportunities within the laboratory for human error. Common laboratory errors that occur despite laboratory automation include using the wrong reagent or documenting findings incorrectly. Errors such as these can add significant costs to the bottom line because of the need to re-perform experiments or additional time to be spent on recording findings. However, implementing an electronic lab notebook can help reduce or even eliminate these common human errors through real-time system quality reviews and quicker manual oversight. Below are a few examples demonstrating how an electronic lab notebook could catch errors before they occur: Real-Time Quality Reviews Human errors can be prevented if they are caught before they are allowed to cause any damage. One way electronic lab notebooks can facilitate the identification of errors is by enabling quality reviews in real time. For example, imagine a scientist would like to perform an experiment using a chemical reagent.
