with replication, in a simple master/slave relationship. mysql2 is the master, mysql1 is the slave. A year ago, mysql was the master and mysql2 was the slave. We had to reverse their roles during a hardware failure. On the master, we explicitly set the server_id (server-id) [root@mysql2 ~]# grep server-id my.cnf server-id = 2 [root@mysql2 ~]# mysql -e "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'server_id'" +---------------+-------+ | Variable_name | Value | +---------------+-------+ | server_id | 2 | +---------------+-------+ But, this setting was not set in my.cnf on the slave. [root@mysql1 ~]# grep server-id my.cnf Whoops. This shouldn't matter, because the server_id is set to 1 by default. [root@mysql1 ~]# mysql -e "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'server_id'" +---------------+-------+ | Variable_name | Value | +---------------+-------+ | server_id | 1 | +---------------+-------+ If I restart mysql, then the replication will work fine. However, if I manually "STOP SLAVE" "START SLAVE", I get an error: [root@mysql1 ~]# mysql -e "STOP SLAVE;" [root@mysql1 ~]# mysql -e "START SLAVE;" ERROR 1200 (HY000) at line 1: The server is not configured as slave; fix in config file or with CHANGE MASTER TO Why do I get this error when I don't explicitly set a value in my.cnf ? Why does replication work when I
issue SHOW SLAVE STATUS\G and notice that everything is fine but "Slave_IO_Running" and "Slave_SQL_Running" both say "No". You don't have skip-slave-start in your my.cnf file. Why did this happen? Baffled- you issue "START SLAVE;" error 2013 hy000 mysql and get: ERROR 1200 (HY000): The server is not configured as slave; fix in

config file or with CHANGE MASTER TO This has happened to me numerous times throughout my time administering mysql servers. change server_id mysql It does not happen frequently enough to not baffle you at the first glance, but then you start remembering last time this happened.. The variable server_id always need to be set to something when http://dba.stackexchange.com/questions/4400/mysql-if-server-id-is-not-explicitly-set-then-get-error-error-1200-hy000-a running replication. Check if server_id is set by issuing "SHOW VARIABLES LIKE ‘server_id';. The value should not be "0″ or "1″. "1″ is normally set by default. Also, the master's server_id and the slave's server_id should not be the same. You can set the server id by issuing "SET GLOBAL server_id=;" then issue a START SLAVE; We should be fine now.. Ugh, I know this is fairly http://krzykawski.com/2012/12/28/error-1200-hy000-the-server-is-not-configured-as-slave/ easy to find, but in an attempt to have this fresher in memory, a quick blog post helps remembering.
