I wanted to do a dual boot last night with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. I booted up off the cd and launched the install planning to install Ubuntu on a seperate partition but landing up get this error "Buffer I/O Error on device, fd0 Logical Block 0" right after I selected "Install Ubuntu" off the CD. Originally I thought it's because all the formats of my partitions were in NTFS so I formatted a partition to Ext 3 hoping it would solve the problem but didn't I than ran the cd within Windows and selected "Install within Windows" option and allocated 15GB of space from my primary partition but when my machine rebooted I again received t

How do I fix this problem?A. This message appears when you don’t have a floppy drive attached to Linux server. Solution is quite simple http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-end_request-ioerror-dev-fd0-sector0/ just disable driver for floppy and reboot the system. You can verify this with the following command (this solution works with RHEL, CentOS, Redhat, Ubuntu/Debian and other Linux distros) : # lsmod | grep -i floppy Output:floppy 95465 0Open file called /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist: # vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist Listing a module (driver name) in this file prevents the hotplug scripts from loading it. Usually that'd be so that some other driver will bind it instead, no matter which driver happens to get probed first. Sometimes user mode tools can also control driver binding. Append following line: blacklist floppy Save and close the file. Now reboot the Linux server: # reboot Share this tutorial on:TwitterFacebookGoogle+Download PDF version Found an error/typo on this page?About the author: Vivek Gite is a seasoned sysadmin and a trainer for the Linux/Unix & shell scripting. install Ubuntu 7.10 on a selection of Dell Latitude C510/C610's yesterday. When I loaded the standard desktop install CD it kept coming up with the error Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0, then it would not be able to finish the install. This was frustrating - but the solution was relatively simple. All you need to do is download and use the alternative installation which you can get here, and then for some reason that will work. I looked for other causes of the problems and it has been claimed that it could also be if you use a multi-drive as opposed to a single purpose CD drive. However I did not find this was true in my situation! So after several hours I now have Ubuntu running on a couple of laptops to take and give away in East Africa! Success!!
