For the last couple of weeks, I have seen the spinning wheel show up on virtually mac disk1 i/o error any task I try to accomplished, especially when using Safari. At times the delay is just disk0s2 i/o error mac a few seconds and other times a delay for up to 20-30 seconds. At first I thought it was Safari so I reinstalled the error 0xe00002ca detected for lvg macintosh hd latest update. Went to Time Machine and brought back any programs that I had recently updated for downloaded and still no change.I went to Activity Monitor and did not see anything unusual. then went to Console where I get how to fix disk0s2 io error the following error message on virtually any task I key in "kernel[0]: disk3s2: I/O error." i have Verified my drives and have repaired disk permissions. Still the problem persists.What causes this error message and how do I fix the problem? that is one program where manually emptying the temp files and caches doesn't happen on its own automatically, you really need to do it yourself, or rely and hope on the "Reset" feature. Anytime a program is updated, good idea to clean the temp caches anyway as they may cause trouble. Check home library /Caches/MetaData and empty the contents, and the icon cache as well. When Safari launches, it copies the bookmarks into a cache folder as well so there are 100s or whatever files there. Don't rely on Apple First Aid, and not with a maxed out system. Disk Warrior is reliable and finds more. Trouble is unlike TechTool Pro it is one at a time, and mostly one trick only, so it can be slow and can't do much to speed it up. There are nice FAQs on preventing and troubleshooting kernel panics if you look and want to go that route. I initially thought this was the work of an outdated program failing to play nice with the newest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.5) which I had installed days before. Every reboot cycle gave me the same problem- the computer would run for about 30 seconds, but then any use and it started beachballing. Finally, it just didn't reboot. The computer hung at the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning ball. No peripherals (external hard drive, USB mouse, etc.) were attached so that was immediately ruled out. To attempt to diagnose http://balloflightning.com/2010/12/io-error-os-x-hard-drive-failing/ the problem, I attempted to boot into safe mode. Not happening. Tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM. Nada. Finally, the next series of steps allowed me to salvage my hard drive and let my Macbook live to see another day (minus a $700 data recovery charge). Boot into single-user mode (sometimes called verbose mode) (hold down Control-V as soon as the Mac chime sounds after pressing the power button). You should now be in an environment that looks like this: At the command line type: /sbin/fsck -fy and press Return. You will receive messages about the disks use and fragmentation as fsck will now go through five phases of disk utility. If you get: disk0s3: I/O Error then you have a problem with bad sectors on the hard drive. Eventually, fsck will probably tell you: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** Repeat the fsck process above. Keep repeating the above process until ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***** does not appear. Even after this message disappears, repeat one more time. If this message doesn't disappear, and you continue to get disk0s3: I/O Error or similar errors, it might be time to think about punting the hard drive (or visiting a data recovery specialist if you don't have a backup). Type reboot at the prompt. You should be able to boot (hopefully). If you can, find an empty external hard drive. If it's big enough (more than 2x

Within my first couple of days, it became apparent that users were having performance issues reading from and writing to the file server (which had been a problem for several months before I started.) After a quick investigation, the RAID was near capacity (4.99 of 5TB used, 14GB free.) We decided to purchase an additional RAID system and are expecting it within the next two days. Meanwhile, I have been unable to successfully back up the data files. I have tried using Disk Utility to create disk images of the entire volume, as well as images of individual folders within the volume. It never completes and returns a generic error: "Unable to create [folder].dmg. (Input/output error)." Console shows hundreds of the following error: kernel: disk3s2: I/O error. I ran diskutil -list in Terminal and confirmed that disk3s2 is the RAID volume. I have also tried to manually copy (or even drag and drop) important folders to another volume, but that has also been unsuccessful. Does anyone have any other ideas that may help? This data is mission critical, so any and all advice is welcome.
