Everything was working fine, downloading as expected when all of a sudden I lost any ability to connect with HTTP. My browser stopped working and any app that tried to make a web connection would either crash (poor programming) or give an error saying it couldn't connect. This included checking for updates as well as trying to use Firefox. Oddly, I was able to connect to other machines on my network, use Remote Desktop and even Ping sites, but couldn't make a connection. I went through a slew of trial and error, including adding a wireless USB adapter which gave me the error Windows Socket Initialize Failed. Finally, an error I could work with. Turns out Winsock and TCP/IP are busted all to hell. I even reinstalled the network drivers but that didn't help. Then I found this article which had me delete the Winsock registry keys and import them again. After a reboot, everything was working as expected. This is an insanely annoying error, but before you gp tearing things apart or reinstalling everything under the sun, whack a couple of registry keys and import them back. It should clear up the problem and kick HTTP in the pants and make it work again. For more information and other error codes, check out the article I found that solved the problem for me.
