(well, up until today). After a reboot, the boot process drops to the BusyBox shell and I end up at the prompt: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) I've been researching others who have had this same problem, but haven't been able to find any of those solutions to work for me. I tried the method described here, and after the final command mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /root -o force it does nothing and gives me another (initramfs) prompt. I can boot to a live CD (USB) and get to a terminal, but it doesn't seem to do much good, as I can see the /dev/sda1 in the ls command, but it doesn't recognize it when I try to cd to it. One more question: using the command fdisk -l how can I tell which mount point (sda1/sda2) is my windows partition and which one is Ubuntu? boot initramfs share|improve this question edited Feb 19 '14 at 8:56 karel 22.7k95366 asked May 16 '12 at 2:04 dpm 246133 This was the winner, BTW cyberciti.biz/faq/… –dpm May 17 '12 at 1:30 1 I can't believe Canonical hasn't implemented yet a proper user-friendly workflow to fix this situation :( –knocte Jul 12 at 3:35 There has to be a better way to fix the case. You do not need Live Ubuntu for the task, since I have managed to solve it without it. I thin

Every time I try to boot I get this message and I can not go any further: BusyBox v1.17.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.17.1-10ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands (initramfs) My main worry are my files and pictures as I don't have a back-up. Any advice would be very much appreciated! boot-failure initramfs busybox share|improve this question edited Jun 21 http://askubuntu.com/questions/153852/can-not-boot-initramfs-error '12 at 0:02 Emerson Hsieh 4,53852654 asked Jun 20 '12 at 21:52 Maira 11112 1 You can always recover your files using a live cd or a live usb during boot. You can then mount your hard drive and find your folder (should be in the home folder). About the problem, do you remember what was the last thing you have done? Did you install a package from PPA repositories? –medigeek Jun 20 '12 at 21:56 Press ctrl+D to boot from there –Ketan Patel Nov 7 '12 at 10:28 Check out this askubuntu.com/questions/137655/… –Ketan Patel Nov 7 '12 at 10:30 have you dual boot system ? –Ketan Patel Nov 7 '12 at 10:31 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote I have the same problem...I did some commands in the terminal after logging into the live cd The following step is for removing the i-node In the terminal I typed sudo debugfs -w /dev/sda1 debugfs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) debugfs: clri <8> debugfs: quit After that restart the system and again boot into the live cd In the terminal type sudo fsck -yv /dev/sda1 It will work.....definitely After logging into the desktop in the terminal type the following commands sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get check For More Details visit the tutorial page http://dcageek.blogspot.com/2013/02/ubunt

I've tried looking for a solution to this problem elsewhere in the forums and have found references to the exact same problem in older versions of Ubuntu but nothing specific to 12.10. If anyone can provide a fix, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!
