Either the drive broke, or the connector between drive and the motherboard broke (or came loose) or something on the motherboard broke. To check if the drive is broken, remove the drive and try to use it with another computer. E.g.. plug in in as an extra drive in a desktop, use an external USB case or use a HDD dock like these: To try to solve the middle problem, remove the drive from the laptop and reconnect it. This is called 'reseating the drive`. If the drive works fine in a dock or in another computer then it is likely a problem with the laptop. Try using another drive and see if it also fails (it probably will give the same problem) so you can confirm this. If it is then check if the laptop is still under warranty. share|improve this answer answered Apr 27 '13 at 20:49 Hennes 51.1k776121 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote If you haven't used the machine before, and it is causing this

Ensure the connectors are in firmly. Often removing and reinserting the drive can solve the issue. Always turn off and unplug the computer when performing these tasks. On page 25 of the service manual are instructions to remove the hard drive. To reinstall the drive, reverse the steps. If the error continues, it is possible the drive has failed. share|improve this answer answered Jan 23 '14 at 14:58 CharlieRB 17.5k33168 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Reseat the drive means - Removing and then reinstall. Here is what I recommend: Yesterday, in the middle of switching between user accounts, my Girlfriend's laptop went blank, then blue screen, then when everything restarted an awful error message appeared: "No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" If you ask tech support, they will likely suggest wiping your hard drive (if it is just corrupted) and starting over, or buying a new hard drive (if it really is dead) and starting over.
