up vote 98 down vote favorite 36 I am trying to deploy an ASP.NET application. I have deployed the site to IIS, but when visiting it with the browser, it shows me this: Server Error 500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. After fiddling around with the web.config, I now get: The page 500 - internal server error. there is a problem with the resource you are looking for and it cannot cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. How can I see the actual issue behind this server error? asp.net iis error-handling share|improve this question edited Jan 9 '14 at 15:42 Aristos 51k978117 asked Mar 22 '11 at 1:22 Jakub Jedryszek 2,16362435 1 Make sure you have the wildcard mapping in place for MVC application on the directory... –sajoshi Mar 22 '11 at 4:11 add a comment| 16 Answers 16 active oldest votes up vote 179 down vote accepted First, you need to enable and see detailed errors of your web messages, because this is a general message without giving information on what's really happening for security reasons. With the detailed error, you can locate the real issue here. Also, if you can run the browser on the server, you get details on the error, because the server recognizes that you are local and shows it to you. Or if you can read the log of the server using the Event Viewer, you also see the details of your error. My computer is WindowXP Pro and IIS 5.1 isinstalled. I made sure all the components of IISare installed. I ticked the World Wide Web Services when I installed the IIS. When I typed http;//localhost on the Internet Explorer 7,Error message comes out so I made myself a default html page saying that this http://forums.iis.net/t/1127251.aspx?ASP+file+with+HTTP+500+Internal+Server+Error is a test page. That is fine. I can get that page. And any html files I created and saved in www.root folder. I can see in the Internet Explorer after typing http;//localhost/anything.html. But as soon as I create an ASP page and saved in www.root folder,HTTP500 Internal Server Error Page cannot displaycomes out in Internet Explorer. Ther are two asp files already in www.root folder I did not make those, they came with IIS. One call iisstart.asp and another call localstart.asp. I typed http;//localhost/iisstart.asp and alsoI typed http;//localhost/localstart.asp but result is the same. HTTP 500 Internal Server Error Page cannot display. When I double clicked the iisstart.asp file in the www.root folder, It opens up with the Dreamweaver and saying as follows. Under Construction(www.root/iisstart.asp) Under Construction The site you were trying to reach does not currently have a default page. It may be in the process of being upgraded and configured. Please try this site again later. If you still experience the problem, try contacting the Web site administrator. However; there is nothing showing up in the Application Event Log where I would expect to see a (more) detailed description of the entry. How can I go about diagnosing this issue? iis-7.5 windows-event-log 500-error asp.net-mvc share|improve this question edited Jul 16 '12 at 7:55 asked Jul 15 '12 at 21:25 Greg B 4843825 I've had the exact same issue here. In my experience, if the event log is empty than the request wasn't correctly routed to the worker process. In one of our recent deployments we saw the app work intermittently with about 50% of the requests randomly failing with the 500 error and nothing in the logs. I suspect something is going wrong with the AppDomain unload that occurs after deployment. Out of curiosity, are you running antivirus in your production environment? Does an IIS reset solve the issue (until the next deployment)? –ShadowChaser Feb 21 '13 at 16:17 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 22 down vote accepted Take a look at IIS7's Failed Request Tracing feature: Troubleshooting Failed Requests Using Tracing in IIS 7 Troubleshoot with Failed Re
