logs? up vote 45 down vote favorite 7 I'm getting 500 Internal Server errors when I try to make an HTTP POST to a specific address in my app. I've looked into the server logs in the custom log directory specified in the virtual hosts file, but the error doesn't show up there so debugging this has been a pain in the ass. Apache tries to be helpful when it encounters a problem. In many http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/faq/all_in_one.html cases, it will provide some details by writing one or messages to the server error log. Sometimes this is enough for you to diagnose & fix the problem yourself (such as file permissions or the like). The default location of the error log is /usr/local/apache2/logs/error_log, but see the ErrorLog directive in your config files for the location on your server. Check the FAQ! According to a website that I read, it should be at /var/log/httpd/error_log But I don't have the httpd directory on /var/log apache-2.2 share|improve this question asked Oct 8 '10 at 22:05 valter 1812721 It is where you described it. Probably you never started apache and therefore this directory internal server error did not get created. Or you have you custom build configuration. Did you maybe install some hosting control panel software? –Raffael Luthiger Oct 8 '10 at 22:13 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 5 down vote accepted Check your httpd.conf The LogFile variable tells you where apache is writing logs. This value is often (always?) relative to the ServerRoot variable. share|improve this answer answered Oct 9 '10 at 0:13 tim 44624 add a comment| up vote 5 down vote Chances are it's in /var/log/httpd. Do you have locate installed? Have you run updatedb recently, or have it cronified? If so, you can do locate error_log. share|improve this answer answered Oct 9 '10 at 0:26 Andy Lester 453212 add a comment| up vote 2 down vote take a look at your /etc/httpd.conf file and check where you are writing your logs valter. as Raffael says it maybe that you've got them being written to odd locations. check that your httpd server actually started too! :-) share|improve this answer answered Oct 8 '10 at 22:20 Khushil 488310 I found the following line on httpd.conf, in other server: ErrorLog logs/error_log –valter Oct 8 '10 at 22:42 2 check in /etc/logs or /var/logs or set a full path there '/var/log
scripts and finding missing files or broken links you may not be aware of. If the error messages you find are related to your website and you are not sure what they mean or how to fix the issue. Error Logs Overview Main Error Logs PHP Error Logs Error Logs Overview The cPanel Error Logs tool is useful when debugging scripts and finding missing files or broken links you may not be aware of. If the error messages you find are related to your website and you are not sure what they mean or how to fix the issue, it is advisable to contact the script developer for further troubleshooting. There are 2 different sections of the Error logs page you should be aware of: Main Error Log The Main Error Log This section shows the last few lines of the server's main error log. These lines are displayed in chronological order with the time, IP address of the visitor and the error message. Because this is a shared server, you will see errors for all accounts on the server. If you are trying to locate error messages originating from your hosting account, you may need to refresh your URL which has the error/problem, and then refresh the Error Logs page. PHP Error Logs The PHP Error Logs will show errors related to php scripts only for your account. These errors are sorted by directory and do not automatically disappear as do the main error logs. The errors shown is stored in the error_log file within each directory. If you would like to clear the php error_logs, simply delete the error_log files in each directory using File Manager or FTP. Note: At the bottom of the Error Logs page you can limit the output of each section to a specific number of lines. There is also a link to the Process Manager cPanel tool. Shared and Reseller You can login to cPanel and click the Error Log icon. This contains the last 300 Apache errors triggered by your website. VPS and Dedicated Server On a Dedicated Server or VPS without a cPanel installation, most log files would be located in the /var/log/ directory. The Apache log would then be located in the /var/log/httpd/ directory. However, for all of our servers with cPanel installs, the actual location of the Apache error log is /usr/local/apache/logs/error_log, where “error_log” is simply a plain text file.
