and am having trouble getting errors to show. I've copied all the website application files from a different as well as the folder structure and everything in /etc/httpd/. When I access my site, I get a 500 error, or a blank page. The logs are showing nothing at all, apart form logging the 500 error: [24/Feb/2012:17:33:25 +1100] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 - "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.1" 405 229 7176 My htaccess looks like this: ErrorDocument internal server error apache virtual host 404 /error.php php_flag display_errors on php_flag display_startup_errors on php_flag file_uploads on php_value error_reporting 6143 php_value max_input_time 60 php_value post_max_size 8M php_value upload_max_filesize 2M ~ So errors are turned on... Start of PHP file has: error_reporting(-1); ini_set('display_errors', 1); ini_set('display_startup_errors', 1); and php.ini has error_reporting set to E_ALL. ... yet I am getting errors on the screen for some things (such as not closing a string), but my issues are a bit bigger than i think and i have no idea where to start debugging! Now I know there are error with what I am trying to run, I know I have missing some files and what not but something should show in the apache error log (otherwise how are I supposed to know exactly what I am missing). I created a test script is errors it in under the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7149030/php-return-500-error-but-no-error-log same vhost configuration and those error show up fine so everything seems configured right as far as php/apache. Are there certain php errors that does show up in the error log (php is configure to display any type of notice, warning, , error, fatal error, etc...)? This is running on ubunut 10.04 with the standard apache and php from the ubuntu repo with apt-get. php apache logging error-handling share|improve this question edited Aug 22 '11 at 17:36 Charles 40k1069107 asked Aug 22 '11 at 14:30 ryanzec 7,6422280134 this is with windows and IIS, correct? –Neal Aug 22 '11 at 14:33 sorry, should have included: ubuntu 10.04 –ryanzec Aug 22 '11 at 14:35 Apache and PHP both from the standard ubuntu repo with apt-get –ryanzec Aug 22 '11 at 14:38 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 32 down vote accepted Scan your source files to find @. From php documentation site Currently the "@" error-control operator prefix will even disable error reporting for critical errors that will terminate script execution. Among other things, this means that if you use "@" to suppress errors from a certain function and either it isn't available or has been mistyped, the script will die right there with no indication as to why. share|improve this answer edited Jul

I won't bug you with the gory details here but just want to ask: Did anyone out there ever observe the web browser receiving a "http 500 inernal server error" while NOTHING alike appears in the apache's error and access log? It's currently not about the details here, but just internal server error that I believe this strange behavior should already lead into the right direction since I don't believe there are many possibilities where this can happen at all. When this internal server error happens, the PHP scripts continue running just fine without any failure, but of course the result they want to deliver to the browser will never appear, since the browser already thinks about his internal server error being the end of the world as he knows it. That is, all of our in house applications log to specific directories other than the root Apache log; but if something happens outside the app (say the interpreter crashes), it would get recorded to /var/log/httpd/*. Could this be the case? –Andrew M. Apr 19 '11 at 14:02 That's a very good idea, I will check this. –Roman Blöth Apr 19 '11 at 14:07 add a comment| 6 Answers 6 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote SOLVED: Alas, there is a load balancer controlling the server, and the load balancer was set up to stop connections after 10 seconds of inactivity or so. This can happen if the .htaccess files in your DokuWiki directory use settings or trigger actions which are not supported by your Apache server config. If you're not running the server yourself, but are registered with a webhost, you can either ask your webhost to enable the options in question, or just comment them out in the htaccess files. The options which are known to cause an Error 500 are: Options -Indexes as well as all settings related to Apache's mod_rewrite option to pretty-print URLs. The latter are disabled by default. It may also occur when setting very permissive file permissions (777) and your hoster added some security checks to avoid this. Try to lower permissions. Another problem can occur if you're using .htaccess files using UTF-8 codification with Byte-Order Mark (BOM). Reencode your .htaccess files properly without BOM to solve this. It may happen if you are using Fedora with SElinux and copied the dokuwiki files from your home directory. To correct it, run “restorecon -r .” as root on the website dokuwiki directory Some people reported a 500 error when creating new users or changing passwords on certain hosters. Try to change the passcrypt option from smd5 to md5. If you use discussion plugin and a 500 error occures after submit a comment, insert a recipient email address at notify. Maybe this is a bug in 2009-02-14. This error can also manifests itself as a PHP error. Try adding the code below to one of your PHP files such as local.php, then checking the error log file it generates. ini_set('log_errors', 1); ini_set('error_log', 'errorlog.txt'); This error will happen when editing/creating if you are using PHP7 on Linux without installing php7.0-xml. Some combinations of plugins seem to cause this behaviour. If in doubt, disable user-installed plugins. If this restores access to your Wiki, make sure all of your plugins are update-to-date using Plugin Manager. If you cannot access your Admin/Plugin Manager page but you do have access to the server's filesystem (e.g. by ssh), then yo
