Internal Server Error Apache Virtual Host
takes a minute: Sign up Internal Error 500 Apache, but nothing in the logs? up vote 45 down vote favorite 7 I'm getting 500 Internal Server errors when I try to make an HTTP POST to a specific address in https://www.digitalocean.com/community/questions/ssl-page-is-giving-a-500-internal-server-error my app. I've looked into the server logs in the custom log directory specified in the virtual hosts file, but the error doesn't show up there so debugging this has been a pain in the ass. How do I cause Apache to log Internal 500 errors into the error log? apache error-logging share|improve this question edited Dec 11 '13 at 6:05 Eric Leschinski 45.9k23219189 asked Jan 19 '11 at 3:04 wcolbert 5402821 I had same issue using PHP with http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4731364/internal-error-500-apache-but-nothing-in-the-logs virtual hosts....no errors (Apache2, Ubuntu). Ended up being missing PHP modules (mysql, json, etc.) –user484474 Aug 7 '11 at 19:57 On ours, it was sending them to the access log (presumably because from Apache's point of view, it was working correctly and merely passing them along, from a deeper layer -- in our case, Passenger/Rails). Just putting this note here in case somebody is scratching their head. –Tom Hundt Jul 8 at 18:29 add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted The error log usually has the (more) specific error. often it will be permissions denied or even an interpreter that can't be found. This means the fault almost always lies with your script. e.g you uploaded a perl script but didnt give it execute permissions? or perhaps it was corrupted in a linux environment if you write the script in windows and then upload it to the server without the line endings being converted you will get this error. in perl if you forget print "content-type: text/html\r\n\r\n"; you will get this error There are many reasons for it. so please first check your error log and then provide some more information. The default error log is often in /var/log/httpd/error_log or /var/log/apache2/error.log. The reason you look at the default error logs (as indicated above) is because errors don't always get posted into the custom error log as defined in the virtual
the log file causing Apache to not start Untrusted certificate warnings in browsers or intermediate certificate errors on DigiCert.com/help The browser error message "ssl_error_rx_record_too_long" Errors That Keep Apache from Starting Errors that keep Apache from https://www.digicert.com/ssl-support/apache-fix-common-ssl-errors.htm starting can be very frustrating. This usually happens when Apache is reading the configuration files and finds something it doesn't know how to handle. The first step when you experience this issue is to check your log file for an error that might point to the problem. The default location of the log files is as follows: Debian (Ubuntu): /var/log/apache2/error_log Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS: /var/log/httpd/error_log Windows: C:\Program Files\Apache internal server Group\Apache2\logs\error.log Default Location From Compiling Source Code: /usr/local/apache2/logs/error_log If the log files are not in the above location, you may have defined a different log file location in your httpd.conf file or the VirtualHost section of your .conf file. Some possible conf file errors you may find are listed below. "Unable to configure RSA server private key" and "certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch" Errors If you see one of these errors internal server error it usually means that the private key that is being loaded in the VirtualHost section of your .conf file doesn't match the SSL Certificate being loaded in the same section. To check if the two files match, run the following OpenSSL command on each of them: openssl x509 -noout -modulus -in your_domain_com.crt | openssl md5 openssl rsa -noout -modulus -in your_domain_com.key | openssl md5 If the modulus of the two files doesn't match exactly, do one of the following: Find the .key file matching your .crt file and update the VirtualHost in your .conf file to match. Reissue your certificate by either generating two new files with the OpenSSL CSR Wizard or by creating a new CSR from your existing private key file using the following command. Note that the existing private key must be at least 2048 bits. If the key is less than 2048 bits you will have to recreate the key. openssl req -new -key your_domain_com.key -out your_domain_com.csr "Invalid command 'SSLEngine'" Error This error can be caused by mod_ssl not being installed on a server. This module is required by Apache to create SSL connections. To enable this module on CentOS/RedHat Linux run the following command from the console: sudo yum inst
