I've been googling for over 2 hours and nothing I try is working... I want to password protect my website, but as soon as I add in the .htpasswd and .htaccess files I get a server error: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the 500 internal server error htaccess error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Here is the code I'm using: .htaccess AuthType Basic AuthName "Top Secret for SongKick eyes only." AuthUserFile /webroot/.htpasswd require valid-user .htpasswd songkick:isS1rCTQE/p8E I've also tried AuthUserFile /.htpasswd (ie. without "webroot", which is the name of the folder it appears to be in in File Manager) but this doesn't work either. I'm using GoDaddy hosting btw, if that makes a difference. Any help is much appreciated - I'm not a developer so don't understand a lot of the terms used in many of the help articles! .htaccess .htpasswd share|improve this question edited Mar 18 '13 at 12:00 JakeGould 16.5k62851 asked Mar 18 '13 at 11:56 Leanne Beesley 51113 It should show detailed error report in apache log file, check it first. –aram90 Mar 18 '13 at 11:59 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 21 down vote You must supply the complete path to your password file, not the relative path from DocumentRoot. If DocumentRoot is /var/www and the password file is /var/www/webroot/.htpasswd, you must say AuthUserFile /var/www/webroot/.htpasswd in your .htaccess file. Said that, you shouldn't put your password file anywhere accessible in your DocumentRoot. B

I'd think it should be something like AuthUserFile home/folder/.htpasswd –blamonet Mar 24 '13 at 11:54 Thanks blamonet, but it didn't help. I'm looking into Mr. Millwoods suggestion. –no0ne Mar 24 '13 at 12:00 related: stackoverflow.com/questions/19060586/… –Jay Apr 10 '14 at 22:22 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote First of all, consult the error-log (usually located in /var/log/apache2/error.log) to see the exact cause of the error. If you do not have access to it, check the following: is this technique supported by the server? (ask your provider or admin) is AuthUserFile correct? It seems to be missing a slash and the directory is unusual. I would have suspected something like AuthUserFile /home/webuser/sitefolder/.htpasswd. change the group-file to AuthGroupFile None instead of pointing apache to read /dev/null. Think of /dev/null as a bottom-less trashcan. It's not easy to get anything from t
htaccess anandamideOctober 9th, 2009, 11:17 AMHi chaps I'm setting up a https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1286582.html private webserver and want to make it password protected. ScallioXTX 2011-01-18 10:06:48 UTC #2 I also got this error a while back and the problem for me was that the 401 file Apache was linked to didn't exist. To test this create an empty file called 401.html in your web root and put ErrorDocument 401 /401.html at the top of your .htaccess If that solves the problem you can amend 401.html with the message you'd like people to see if they don't correctly log in. Please suggest. For errors check the error.log of your website. dklynn 2011-01-19 02:37:24 UTC #4 jv, I'd take a close examination of http://www.euronet.nl/~arnow/htpasswd/documentation.html and change your require statement. Regards, DK Home Categorie
