Am not an expert, know some things and was tasked with taking cpanel php internal server error care of Drupal website due to lack of anybody else Running Drupal 6.x (latest update as per Update page when it was still 500 internal server error cpanel fix working...) on VPS with WHM/CPanel 11.44.0 (build 22). Which was the reason to finally update MySQL at least to 5.5.37 (and since 5.0/1 seems to have has support dropped late 2013). Apache Version 2.2.24 Checked that Drupal 6.x hostgator php error log is supposed to work with mySQL 5.5.x, seemed to be OK. Backed up database & files. Ran the updates through WHM. Now getting the dreaded 500 error. Spent several hours already searching & trying different solutions but no dice. Any help very welcome. So far I tried: - Apache is up and running. Files are still present in public_html/ folder in which Drupal resides, shouldn't be corrupted since they weren't before. Did a database check, no

errors either. - error_log entries stopped around the time update was complete. suexec_log is mentioned, was not able to locate - php: strangely CPanel says Version Unknown, not sure what before, but maybe due to CPanel & Apache using separate versions? Anyway, changes in config in WHM are reflected correctly in CPanel PHP info of affected site. - .htaccess (in the root of public_html): as per other posts, tried deleting file, tried complete replacement with code pasted from generic Drupal .htaccess code, tried enabling/disabling "Options -Indexes", "Options +FollowSymLinks", "RewriteBase /", no dice - tried adding "error_reporting(E_ALL); ini_set('display_errors', TRUE); ini_set('display_startup_errors', TRUE);" to index.php, but since PHP doesn't seem to execute at all, no changes Basic (mis?)understandings: - the affected files should be in the root of the public_html/ folder, or is it possible that things would be affected by the .htaccess files at the root of the server (though I tried both)? - The Apache server does not have to be restarted every time for a change to take effect, refreshing the home page of the affected site should be enough? (I did restart the server a few times anyway) I have some suspicion it may be PHP related, so from phpMyAdmin (4.1.8): cpsrvd 11.44.0.22, Database client version: libmysql - 5.1.73, PHP extension: mysqli Any help welcome! The most common reasons are noted below: Bad Permissions, Writeable by Group Bad .htaccess, Invalid Command Exceeding Resources, Nothing in the Error Log There are steps to take to find out what is causing the errors. To begin troubleshooting: Log into cPanel. In the Logs section, click the Error Log icon. This log will display the last 300 Error Log messages in reverse order. If the Error Log doesn't provide any indication of the issue, try http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/internal-server-error-help-500-error troubleshooting by following the suggestions listed below. Bad Permissions, Writeable by Group To troubleshoot this error, check your file permissions. In cPanel, in the Files section, click File Manager. Select the button for Web Root (public_html/www). Place a check mark in the box titled Show Hidden Files (dotfiles). Click Go. Review the numbers listed under the Perms column in File Manager. Directories and folders should be set to 755. Bad .htaccess, Invalid Command In the (dot) htaccess file, you may have added lines that are either worded incorrectly or conflicting with other coding in the file. The best way to troubleshoot this is to comment out the lines in the .htaccess file. Always make a copy of the .htaccess file before making any changes to it. You can comment out a line in the .htaccess file by adding # to the beginning of that particular line. For example, if the code in the .htaccess file looks like: DirectoryIndex default.html AddType application/x-httpd-php5 php Then, try commenting it out like so: DirectoryIndex default.html #AddType application/x-httpd-php5 php Broken lines and lines that start with php_flags are the most common mistakes. If you cannot determine which line is the problem, then comment out every line. For additional information regarding php_flags,

This is because functions or features that your site uses have been removed in the newer version. You can either modify your web site's code to make it compliant with the new version, or you can revert PHP to the previous version. Copying an updated version of php.ini If you use a custom php.ini file, make sure you use the correct file for your PHP version. For example: If you are using PHP 5.3, copy the php.ini file located at /usr/local/lib/php.ini. This is the default php.ini file. If you are using PHP 5.2.17, copy the php.ini file located at /opt/php/php-5.2.17/lib/php.ini. You can find additional PHP versions in the /opt/php directory. To copy the updated php.ini file to your public_html directory, log in to your account using SSH and then use the cp command. For example, the following command copies the default php.ini file to a user's public_html directory. Replace USERNAME with your own account username: cp /usr/local/lib/php.ini /home/USERNAME/public_html/php.ini To make the php.ini settings apply to all subdirectories, add the following line to your .htaccess file. Replace USERNAME with your own account username: SuPHP_ConfigPath /home/USERNAME/public_html/ If you are using custom sett
