The reason you get the error is because the certificate is issued to dreamhost.com but you are accessing via mail.example.com. 06-21-2011, 08:15 AM Post: #3 stevenelder Dreamling Posts: 2 Joined: Jun 2011 RE: Certificate error in Outlook IMAP Accounts As a workaround I do click 'yes', but I have four accounts to do this for everytime I open MS Outlook. As you can imagine this can get internet security warning outlook 2016 quiet annoying over time. Can dreamhost issue a certificate automatically for every domain utilizing mail services? 06-21-2011, 08:45 AM (This post was last modified: 06-21-2011 09:27 AM by LakeRat.) Post: #4 LakeRat Grizzled Veteran Posts: 3,269 Joined: Feb 2008 RE: Certificate error in Outlook IMAP Accounts I can think of two choices here (there may be more... and if someone supplies another I will be learning too): Choice 1 - turn off encryption (edit the email account, click 'more settings' and on the advanced tab set the dropdown for secure connections to 'none' Using this choice your email in no longer encrypted between the server and outlook. (this is also the method that Outlook 'discovers' by default if you use the new account wizard to add the account.) Choice 2 - if you need the encrypted connection, leave your setup as is and deal with the warning. ------ Dreamhost could, as you suggest, issue a certificate for each mail domain. However, if they issue a 'self-signed' certificate like the one currently in use for mail, it still would not solve the problem as windows would report "Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate." and the same error dialog would

Outlook The Name On The Security Certificate Is Invalid
a certificate problem. My company firewall, which is a FortiGate 80C, is doing inspection into IP packets to see if there's any virus. In order to do so, the https://discussion.dreamhost.com/thread-130246.html firewall is using the "man in the middle" trick: it decrypts communicates with imap.gmail.com on one side, and encrypts communication using another certificate issued by itself and send the packet to Outlook (or any IMAP client like Thunderbird) on the other side. So the certificate coming from imap.gmail.com and seen by Outlook is issued by Fortinet instead of by https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e37ecad7-e54d-418f-af02-6dc45099c952/how-to-make-outlook-2010-accept-untrusted-certificate-for-imap-connection?forum=outlook the original one (I suppose it's Thwarte). If I use Thunderbird, it will ask me if I want to accept such certificate or not. But Outlook 2010 just silently rejects the connection. How to make it accept the certificate, or make it ask me to accept the certificate? I'm 100% sure this problem is due to the firewall because if my PC is connected to the Internet through another firewall, I don't have this problem. Of course, I could disable firewall's inspection, but I would like to do this if there's really nothing else I could do. I think this problem could also be solved if Outlook accept firewall's CA certificate (which is the issuer of the final certificate). I've exported the CA certificate and imported it into Thunderbird's CA store and now TB doesn't ask me to accept final certificate. Then I tried to import the CA certificate into my computer's "Trusted CA certificate store" but this doesn't seem to work. Maybe Outlook is using its own CA certificate store? SystemsHome / Outlook / Security Certificate Warning in Microsoft Outlook Last reviewed on March 22, 2016 —8 Comments This hard to understand error means the security certificate your email server is using http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/security-warnings-in-outlook/ has expired or is invalid for other reasons. I'm getting a security warning when I open Outlook. It says: 'The server you connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the file' That message is saying that the certificate the mail internet security server uses has likely expired. If you are the administrator, you need to install an updated certificate; if you are an end-user, you need to speak to your admin. You can't hide the warning or turn it off, but in all likelihood, it's safe to OK it and connect to your mail server. The message made perfect sense to me but not to the people internet security warning who asked about it, so I asked a couple of family members who aren't into technology what they thought the message was trying to tell them and what they would do if it came up while they were on the computer. Their answer: it "hurt" to read it and they'd ask me to look at it. I guess that proves it's a poorly written, overly technical error message. Target Principle name is incorrect I have a SSL IMAP email account that I just setup in Outlook. Every time I run the program I get a popup: "Internet Security Warning" The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. The target principle name is incorrect. View Certificate. The certificate is self signed so I always just click Yes to continue using the server/email account, but how do I get Outlook to remember? This warning indicates the server name does not match the name in your account settings, or in the case of Exchange server, that the address in the autodiscover file does not match the address the server is using. This is a common problem
