"input error: invalid referer" error message! I'm not using recaptcha plugins. php recaptcha share|improve this question asked Aug 17 '12 at 3:02 ehsun7b 2,11594177 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 28 down vote accepted reCaptcha keys are tied to a certain domain + localhost (when you got your private/public keys from them). You can use it on another domain by requesting new private/public keys or by using a global key. From their website: By default, your reCAPTCHA key is restricted to the specified domain, and any subdomains for additional security. A key for foo.com works on test.foo.com. If you wish to use your key across a large number of domains (e.g., if you are a hosting provider, OEM, etc.), select the global key option. You may want to use a descriptive domain name such as "global-key.mycompany.com" If you own multiple domain names (foocars.com and footrucks.com), you can sign up for multiple keys, or use a global key. share|improve this answer answered Aug 17 '12 at 3:09 Nasreddine 18.3k104

I believe it said invalid referer the load failed, or something (I'll have to recreate the problem to remember the exact message). Fortunately, it's relatively easy to go into the mysql table for captcha_points and change the "captcha_type" field in the "user_login_block" table from "default" to "none," meaning I was able to get into the site. Once I got to the hack this site recaptcha configuration, though, the keys were still in place, and looking at the site now, recaptcha is alive and well. Not sure what happened, but at least it's easy enough to fix for those affected. Update: Alright, it's not an issue with the upgrade, it's my use of recaptcha. I forgot you need a global key to work on a development server (example.local instead of example.com). If you try to use just a specific key you'll get the "Input error: Invalid referer," error message in Firefox, IE 8, or Chrome. Funny, though, Opera uses the keys just fine. Not sure if this a browser specific "bug" or what, but it's not a problem with the module at any rate, just something for Opera users to be aware of.
