In my case it seems to be when i have a field which is a BIGNUMBER which is being retrieved If i untick the preserve option i see this exception: Unexpected conversion error while converting value [RATE BigNumber(16, 4)] to a Number java.lang.Double cannot be cast to java.math.BigDecimal With the preserve i see this: ERROR 07-01 14:58:49,367 - Stream lookup - java.lang.RuntimeException: Error serializing row to byte array org.pentaho.di.core.row.RowMeta.extractData(RowMeta.java:838) org.pentaho.di.trans.steps.streamlookup.StreamLookup.addToCache(StreamLookup.java:339) org.pentaho.di.trans.steps.streamlookup.StreamLookup.readLookupValues(StreamLookup.java:203) org.pentaho.di.trans.steps.streamlookup.StreamLookup.processRow(StreamLookup.java:405) org.pentaho.di.trans.step.RunThread.run(RunThread.java:40) java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619 Not very useful. Anyway in my case it was caused by mixing a field in a row from add constants, with the same field in another row which came from a DB. The DB field came out as bignumber rather than number and so blew up. Weirdly this used to work - i dunno why it stopped working. It didnt generate any warnings in validate either.
