Emissions System - Small leak detected What does that mean? The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at different times performs various tests on the EVAP system. OBD II Enhanced EVAP systems are in place to keep fuel tank vapors p0456 jeep liberty 2005 from venting into the atmosphere, and instead purges them into the engine to be p0456 jeep liberty 2006 burned. Regular pressure tests are conducted by the PCM to monitor the sealed system for leaks. The PCM monitors the EVAP system 2008 jeep liberty p0456 pressure by watching the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. When the sensor indicates a small leak in the EVAP system, this code is set. Potential Symptoms There will likely be no noticeable symptoms other than

the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). This is because the EVAP system is a closed system and only controls fuel tank vapors, not engine management. Causes Usually this P0456 code is caused by an incorrect or faulty gas cap. Filling the fuel tank with the engine running could conceivable cause this code as well or if the cap wasn't properly tightened. Any of the following could also be the cause: A p0456 jeep wrangler small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve The EVAP Canister may be leaking Possible Solutions First, using a scan tool activate the vent solenoid, sealing the system. Then monitor the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. If the system is sealing properly, the number will stay consistent. If is isn't, the pressure sensor will show that as well. If the system slowly leaks, use a smoke machine and watch for smoke exiting the system at any EVAP component. Any where there is smoke exiting the system, that is the faulty component. Do not pressurize the EVAP system with air pressure. Doing so can damage the purge and vent solenoids in the system. few months I've been battling the dang check engine light coming on even after a reset. Got the 0456 code and found out that it was the emission/ evap system "small leak." Most folks, including my mechanic suggested starting https://www.obd-codes.com/p0456 at the gas cap. Big surprise, it came back on after a few hundred miles. I checked all of the evap/vacuum lines (or so I thought) and couldn't find the source. I read somewhere that the battery sometimes corrodes a vacuum line which is right next to it. I checked it and sure as hell, small hole from the battery acid or heat. I did a quick cheap and temporary fix in order to diagnose if that was http://www.jk-forum.com/forums/stock-jk-tech-12/p0456-code-small-evap-leak-fixed-237480/ the source of the code popping. I taped the line up with some electrical tape, and 500 miles later, still no codes popping! Thought I'd share this for anyone else who may be dealing with this frustrating code popping and likes to DIY. I'll be replacing the line soon, and figuring out a way to reroute it or shield it from the battery acid. Once you see where this darn thing is you'll wonder what they were thinking putting it there in the first place. Anyhow, hope this helps someone. Stay dirty my friends. Pressure in a sealed vessel will change linearly as a function of the temperature of the gas in the vessel. Even small leaks will allow the pressure in the vessel to come to equilibrium with the atmospheric pressure. After key-off and a calibrated amount of time, cool down from operating temperatures or diurnal ambient temperature the system pressure will force the system to go negative or draw a vacuum if there is no leak. When the vacuum level reaches 1" H2O (0.25 KPA) the NVLD vacuum switch closes. This sends a signal to the NGC freezing a timer and registering a pass. If a switch closure is not detected an assessm
