This discussion is locked Loren Ryter Level 3 (507 points) Mac OS X Q: Folder Actions will not work - tried everything Recently Folder Actions simply stopped working on 10.6.4. They worked fine before then recently just stopped working.I've tried everything I can think of, including:1. completely removing enabling & disabling & enabling folder actions through the setup app.2. trashing folder actions plist files in user domain and relaunching3. disabling related launchd processes with lingon4. trashing launch agents in user domain and also trying to unload them in terminal5. trying to kill the folder actions dispatcher process in activity monitor (just relaunches, as it should)6. emptying system caches including dyld shared cache using cocktail7. doing most of the above and restartingIt's driving me nuts. Any other ideas?here's some entries from syslog:

Usually these automated actions are exactly what you want, but you may sometimes see items running—either visibly or according to a listing in Activity Monitor (located in /Applications/Utilities)—that you don’t recall adding yourself. Where do they come from? Because such items can increase your Mac’s startup time (and may decrease its performance), you’ll want your machine to load only items that are useful to you. http://www.macworld.com/article/2047747/take-control-of-startup-and-login-items.html Here’s a quick primer on the various kinds of startup and login items and how to manage them. Login items Open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences and click the Login Items tab, and you’ll see a list of apps (and even files and folders) that open every time you log in. (This list is different for each user account on your Mac.) More often than not, items appear in this list because apps added them to it. Most apps that do so ask you for permission first or offer an ‘Open at Login’ checkbox for you to check, but not all are so well behaved. In any case, you can add an item to the list manually by clicking the plus sign (+) button, or remove an item by selecting it and clicking the minus sign (-) button. Everything in the Login Items list—whether added by you or by an app—opens automatically when you log in. Startup items Earlier versions of OS X relied on two folders—/Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems—to hold items designated to load when you start your Mac. Apple now discourages the use of startup items, but some programs (mostly older apps) still u

machine would slow to a virtually unusable crawl. I never used Spotlight, so turning it off completely fixed the problem for me. Here's how: --For 10.5--- https://www.rsmas.miami.edu/users/agleason/comp_other/mds.html (from http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20071102215912892) This is how to disable Spotlight completely in 10.5: 0) Start Terminal and enter the following commands 1) stop and disable the spotlight application itself: cd /System/Library/LaunchAgents launchctl unload com.apple.Spotlight.plist sudo launchctl https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/2822/auto-rename-your-episodes/p4 unload -w com.apple.Spotlight.plist Just ignore the errormessage from the last command. The first command stops the application for the current user. The second command disables for every user. The reason you get the error launchctl error is that you are effectively executing the command as root, but the root user hasn't any running instance of Spotlight. On the other hand, only the root user is able to disable the automatic start of Spotlight. Thus the need for the sudo command. 2) stop and disable the background server: cd /System/Library/LaunchDaemons sudo launchctl unload -w com.apple.metadata.mds.plist 3) remove the .Spotlight-V100 directories sudo find / -iname '.Spotlight-V100' -type launchctl error unloading d -maxdepth 3 -print0 | xargs -0 -t -n1 sudo rm -rf The find part searches for the Spotlight directories and will find the one at the system root as well as on any partitions and attached drives in /Volumes. The -print0 part is there to guard against any spaces and other special characters in filenames when executing the following rm command. The .Spotlight-V100 folders are actually empty. Stopping the mds server does this, so if you aren't bothered by these vestiges of the process, you can ignore this step. 4) there's no need to reboot your computer after following these steps. The reason the original poster had to recommend this is because his approach is - I'm sorry to say so - faulty. As one of the previous posters noted, it's bad practise to remove any of the files that Apple has installed. It's much better to modify their settings. 5) If only some of your accounts need/want to have Spotlight enabled, you can copy the /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.Spotlight.plist to the users own ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder and enable/start Spotligth: cp /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.Spotlight.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ launchctl -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.Spotlight.plist ---For 10.4--- To turn spotlight off totally: first modify /etc/hostconfig to read: SPOTLIGHT=-NO- Then to get rid of the e

Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.app Drop an episode into one of the folders you're watching with Episode Linker. You can drag one of the files out and back in if that's easier. Select the lines that appear in the Console. Press command-C to copy them.
