A customer called Microsoft Product Support to determine why the Advertising test in dcdiag.exe was reporting that the global catalog role was not working on a Windows Server 2008 Read-only domain controller (RODC) when all other indicators suggested it was functioning normally. DCDiag.exe reported the DC was advertising as a GC but DCDiag couldn’t perform a search against the GC when the command was issued local to the server or remotely: Dcdiag /test:advertising /v /s:RODC <..snip..> Doing primary tests Testi

both the PDC and a second DC, which both give the "LDAP error 81 (Server Down) Win32 Err 58" error after running "repadmin /showrepl /all ldap error 81 (server down) win32 err 58 /verbos": repadmin /replsum dcdiag /test:dns /s: /DnsBasic dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s: repadmin /syncall repadmin /showrepl * also used the AD Replication Status Tool - no errors detected. I posted two separate questions about these DCs and forgot to mention OS version on this one. 7 DCs, all running windows server 2003, the PDC is STANDARD R2,SP2, others are STANDARD or ENTERPRISE, R1 SP2. When you say old dcs... if my comment above doesn't answer that question and https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/596809-can-t-find-cause-for-ldap-error-81-server-down-win32-err-58 you are referring to physical age, yes. I do have one physical box that has been around for 11 years. The others are all virtual - I do not know their actual "age". The PDC has only been in service a few years. 0 Thai Pepper OP Helpful Post britv8 Oct 4, 2014 at 8:55 UTC Old DCs - I mean dcs that no longer exist in real life, but exist in AD (e.g. under NTDS settings for servers in sites and services) This gives you a bit of an idea of what I mean. http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/01/27/dcdiag-advertising-test-with-error-81.aspx Example in this one was a DC that was turned off, but not properly demoted, and another DC was built with the same name Verify what the issue actually is before rushing into adsiedit.msc And even before that, make sure you have a windows/NT backup of your system drive of your server holding the FSMO roles, (and a system state backup)cause if you screw up in adsiedit , your in a world of pain 0 Sonora OP Joseph9297 Oct 7, 2014 at 1:21 UTC I found a few DCs where isGlobalCatalogReady is false. Thanks for the heads up. 0 Sonora OP Joseph9297 Oct 15, 2014 at 7:18 UTC so, I it's been about week since my last update - sorry. Been stumped by this a while now obviously, but it only just now came to

Replication is crucial when dealing with one or more domains or domain controllers (DCs), no matter whether they're in the same site or different sites. Problems with replication can lead to authentication problems and problems with accessing resources on the network. AD object updates are replicated between DCs to ensure all partitions are synchronized. In large companies, having multiple domains and multiple sites is common. Replication must occur within the local site as well as the additional sites to keep domain and forest data the same between all DCs. I'll show you how to identify AD replication problems. I'll also show you how to troubleshoot and resolve four of the most common AD replication errors: Error -2146893022 (The target principle name is incorrect) Error 1908 (Could not find the domain controller) Error 8606 (Insufficient attributes were given to create an object) Error 8453 (Replication access was denied) Along the way, you'll learn how to analyze replication metadata using tools such as the AD Replication
