After resetting
Canon Lens Error 01 Fix
the camera I got a few more pictures out of it, but the error kept reoccurring. After getting home I played around
Canon Lens Error Repair
and and managed to narrow the problem down. If the lens was at the wide end and the aperture was stopped down at all the error would occur every time. I could also push the aperture preview

button and could see the aperture flutter and close to a different width with each push (no matter what the setting on the camera). If I zoomed the lens then everything worked fine.Canon estimated $200 for the fix!!! I thought that was excessive so looked for alternatives.I found several people on the internet describing similar situation with instruction on a DIY fix. The ones I found most useful I refer to here: 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qml1ukgm58Q&feature=related2) canon lens error 99 http://canonrepair.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/ef-s-17-85-is-aperture-change-as-simple-as-possible/My Fix: 1. Following ref1 I just popped the black cap off the back of the lens. 2. remove 2 tiny screws that fix the lens contact to the mount. 3. remove 4 screws around the silver mount, remove the mount 4. remove cable attached to outer casing and remove casing. 5. remove remaining cable from circuit board. 6. remove 1 screw from circuit board and remove the circuit board.
7. remove 5 screws from outer black plastic ring surrounding back lens. remove ringnote CAREFULL of the focus distance sticker, its very sticky and will crinkle and stick to the inside of the lens. 8. remove rubber zoom cover. 9. remove black square sticker 10. remove 1 screw under sticker and remove the metal fingers.11. remove 3 screws with brash bushings in slots around exposed zoom ring. 12. take out outer outer barrel.note here I deviated from most instruction by NOT removing the front lens13. remove too & middle inner barrel screws: 3screws+3 white bushings holding the IS unit (careful it will become loose and knock around inside) and 3screw+3 bushings holding the focus element. 14. the inner lens set will come out now by pulling the back lens straight out.15. now the aperture is exposed inside the bottom of the barrel. remove 3screws+3 bushings holding it in place.16. remove 117-85mm IS Lens Issues posted Monday, 04 October 2010, 22:54 (+0800), by Martin Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS lens Lens Issues! I'm in a predicament. My Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens is dying. I purchased it canon lens error message brand new about 4.5 years ago, have taken many photos with it, and have found it canon lens error restart to be a great general-purpose zoom lens. A couple of years ago, I bought a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens to replace it, but canon lens error s100 kept the 17-85mm for my children to use. Err 99 Last week, while on a photography road-trip with my two boys, my oldest son was using the 17-85mm lens on his Canon 350D camera. Focusing was fine, but any attempt https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/40439217 to take a photo would result in the 350D showing "Err 99" on the LCD, and the camera had to be turned off and back on to clear the error. "Err 99" is a generic catch-all error code on the 350D, and can mean almost anything (lensrentals.com have a great article on Err 99). Trying the 17-85mm lens on a Canon 50D resulted in a more specific error: "Err 01 - Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. http://martybugs.net/blog/blog.cgi/gear/lenses/Canon-17-85mm-Lens-Issues.html Clean the lens contacts." Not surprisingly, cleaning the lens contacts with a pencil eraser didn't do anything to resolve the error. Narrowing Down The Cause Some further research on the internet indicated a potential issue with the diaphragm assembly (ie, the moving parts that set the aperture). Trial and error indicated the diaphragm assembly was failing under the following conditions: zoom was between 17mm and 24mm aperture was smaller than f/4 Outside of these parameters, the lens still functioned normally: aperture set to f/4 and zoom between 17mm and 24mm aperture anywhere between f/4-f/22 and zoom greater than 24mm The "Depth-of-field Preview" button on Canon DSLR cameras stops the lens down to the currently selected aperture. It proved to be a handy way to test the lens, as I could confirm the lens diaphragm assembly was functioning correctly at the longer zoom range, but failing to operate at all between 17mm and 24mm. When hitting the DOF Preview button, you should be able to hear the diaphragm assembly functioning if the aperture is stopped down from the lens' maximum, as well as seeing the lens' aperture blades closing when looking into the front of the lens. "Err 01" message on a Canon 50D A Common Problem? Apparently this is a fairly common issue with the 17-85mm lens, typically caused by an open circuit in the ribbon flex cable to the diaphragm assembly in the lens,
«Error 99» with my Canon 400D DSLR camera. Little googling, and I found the cause of this. Problem was in the diaphragm unit in the lens. Diaphragm unit connected to the lens motherboard with flatcable, which is damaged https://paulov.com/2011/02/canon-99-error-or-how-to-disassembly-canon-17-85-is-usm-and-replace-diaphragm-unit/ with time, when you use zoom ring. The only way out is to replace flatcable or diaphragm unit with flatcable assembly. Because now I live in Thailand, and I don't have a copper, I ordered diaphragm unit assembly http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/47500/my-efs-17-85-lens-doesnt-focus-or-click-a-picture on EBay. This is my lens. Beauty :) We need some tools to disassembly the lens: Good Phillips screwdrivers PH.0 and PH.00 sizes. Tool to disassembly plastic housings. Latex gloves. Small boxes for screws. There are a lens error lot of screws of different sizes in the lens. Very convenient to place screws of different types in different boxes. Plastic film or something like this to cover inner lenses, when you get it out. This is not a official Canon guide. All responsibility is on you. Remember: after disassembling the device, you lose your warranty! Let's repairing begin. Take the lens. Turn it to see lens mount and unscrew 4 screws, marked red. Turn lens canon lens error again and unscrew 2 screws from side. Lift lens mount a little bit. Attention! Lens mount is connected to the motherboard with flatcable. If you will lift lens mount too much, you can damage flatcable. On this step you need to remove plastic ring in lens mount. Plastic ring attached to aluminium lens mount with 4 latches. Carefully use something thin and long, like screwdriver to press to each latch. You need to press on the latch towards the central and up at the same time. When you open all 4 latches, plastic ring can be removed. Remove plastic ring. Remove aluminium lens mount. Now we can see lens motherboard. Turn lens and remove rubber zoom-ring. Rubber zoom-ring is removed. Unscrew 3 screws under zoom-ring. Remove plastic protector. Unscrew the screw that holds the metal brush. Be very careful with brush contacts, it's easy to damage it. Turn lens and remove plastic ring with text using small screwdriver. There is a special hole in the plastic ring for this operation. Unscrew 3 screws under plastic ring. Attention! There are only this 3 screws are adjustment screws. Before unscrew it, you need to mark it positions on the front lens. Remove front lens. Unscrew another 3 screws under front lens. Done. Remove plastic ring. Plastic ring is removed. Now you can remove telescopic zoom-tube. OK. Now

The camera doesn't capture a picture with this lens attached. It focusses back and forth exactly once per click. I tried with different modes and its the same. When set to auto, the camera correctly auto adjusts the settings like exposure time, but its not changing the F stops. Looking through the viewfinder also shows a dark preview. I think it is a problem with the lens. Can anyone explain what seems to be the problem, and how I can fix it, if the problem is repairable. lens equipment-damage canon-400d share|improve this question edited Feb 1 '14 at 11:59 user41631 172 asked Feb 1 '14 at 5:22 theTuxRacer 257210 3 Have you looked at the lens itself? Does it appear that the iris is closed down when the lens if off the camera? It sounds like the iris is stuck in a closed-down state (a high aperture number, which isn't really user-repairable), but you'd need to check. –user2719 Feb 1 '14 at 6:06 The aperture looks permanently open. –theTuxRacer Feb 2 '14 at 5:05 It's a long shot but check the connection between the camera and the lens. There could be dirt there although most likely this sounds like it needs a repair job –codedude Mar 2 '14 at 6:27 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote Sounds like I've had exactly the same problem as you. I suspect your lens is fixed by now but I thought I'd add a comment for your information and anyone else interested :-) We fixed my lens ourselves - nerve, concentration and patience was required! This was not a job for the faint hearted. I've just blogged our experience Fixed: error 99 with Canon EFS 17-85mm :-) We followed the instructions from an excellent blog by Roman Paulov Canon 99 error or how to disassemble Canon 17-85 IS USM and replace diaphragm unit. share|improve this answer answered
