Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on. i've found it on the net, here is the original text - if that won't help

Submitted: 4 years ago. Category:Digital Cameras Share this conversation Expert: RUSSTING replied4 years ago. Hi,First, try a hard reset. Remove the main battery, the memory card and the date battery (using the instructions below). Press the lens error restart ON/OFF button once. Allow the camera to sit idle for 15 minutes. Press the ON/OFF switch once again then, reinstall batteries and card and power the camera up.If you have been using the same rechargeable batteries, since you purchased the camera 4 or 5 years or more, the charge capacity has diminished. This is normal for rechargeables. Any build up of residue in the lens mechanism along with normal wear over time makes it work harder. Moving the lens takes the most power and with older cameras it is frequently necessary to replace the original batteries since weakened batteries along with the lens inhibiting factors cause errors. High power lithium non-rechargeable batteries help in some cases.Even if the lens extends, it is quite possible that it does not make it to the correct sensor point due to something as simple as a single grain of sand. The incorrect positioning will inhibit the focus and zoom functions. Blowing out the space between the lens barrel and camera body with canned compressed air may dislodge any foreign substance and solve this problem. If you are intere

The error message given is simply "Lens Error, Restart Camera" or "e18 error".See this site for all the error reports:http://e18.bitnet.cx/comments.phpGoogle "canon" and "E18" for more information. Here's a PC World report on the problem:http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,124765-page,1/article.htmlThe point of my posting these links is that a certain percentage of people who buy this canon WILL end up getting the e18 and will lose all their investment. Ordinarily that would be acceptable, you would just send it back to Canon and get a new one. But because Canon refuses to admit this is a problem and Canon will not fix it for free, this problem becomes a fatal one. So when you buy one of these cameras I think you should be aware of the risks involved. That is why I posted all these links.I understand why Canon is not admitting this problem and will not fix it. It takes a technician a lot of work to completely disassemble the camera. Also probably the percentage of cases is high enough that it would cost them a lot of money to send out a free camera for all the e18 errors. Finally it costs Canon a lot of money to reengineer the lens drive mechanism to fix the flaw. It is easier and cheaper for them
