Lens Error and didn't get to the menu. I went online and noticed this is a BIG problem for many people with Canon's. One option offered canon sd630 lens error was to push the lens back in - but since the lens is fully retracted

in my (and many other cases) that is not an option. Another option mentioned was to tap the camera on a hard canon sd700 lens error surface. That didn't work either. Since the Camera is out of warranty (just 2 weeks!) I decided to open it and see what I could do. It turns out I could fix it!!! The problem seems that

miniscule dust/sand particles jam the gears which moves the lens. It is possible to turn the lens motor by hand bit by bit and remove particles stuck in the gear. I will explain in detail below, including pictures. Note: these photo's were made with my 2002 Konica KD-400Z - still working great, while this is the 2nd (and last) Canon. Step 1: Remove all 6 screws with a miniature philips screwdriver (2 bottom, canon sd1100 lens error 2 left, 2 right). They are all the same size screws. Carefully remove front cover, then the back cover. This is what you will see: The lens motor is located behind the flash. With a miniature screw driver it is possible to push this rotor around bit by bit. It takes some time and precision, but you can very slowly see the lens coming out. The rotor must be rotated towards the back of the camera for the lens to open. In other words: the axle should be rotated clockwise. When I switched the camera on after a few revolutions, it actually worked again! Problem solved! However, I wanted to remove the root cause of the problem. I could hear the gear didn't go very smooth, little "ticks" could be heard. It seems small pieces of sand and dust were jamming the lens gear. The lens gear (well, at least 2 gears) can be seen on the side of the camera - see picture below: I used the smallest screw driver and a needle pin to pick out particles of sand/dust which were stuck between the gear. They are easy to see on the black gear, but they were also present on the white gear. I worked the entire gear by pushing the motor rotor bit by bit wit

A big thank you to the folks that helped me fix it. Where I live there is no place that fixes these camera. I had a really great repair experience fixing it with this particular place, they just specialize in the Canon Powershot cameras only and they fixed the thing perfectly! I wanted to share my experience with others as I know I am not the only one to have to deal with this lens error problem. I sent them my video but since they can't post it, I thought to put it up myself. For those of you that are having this lens error thing, the site I used was terrific and they were way less than Canon for the repair, plus they service up the camera when it is in being fixed. The camera is performing flawles

Your help in sharing will be appreciated, and karma lens error will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), 600 lens error "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she
Elph-Lens Error I've never had much to say on a blog before, but then I found myself in an interesting situation. I am traveling in Ecuador and my camera broke. It had a lens error. A friend I met on the way has a similar camera with the same issue. It was difficult to find resources on the new to fix these issues, so I thought I'd post some instructions. My camera is the Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD600, hers is the Sd1300. The process to fix the lens error is similar in all models of this camera. 1)Locate and remove screws from the casing. Some models have different screws in different holes so you will need to remember which screws go where. If you have a spare camera you can take pictures of the process to help you remember. I used a knife to remove the screws, but a small screw driver would be ideal. 2)Remove camera casing to expose camera guts. 3) Locate lens motor and fly wheel. The casing in the electric motor that works the lens retraction is a silver colour. Next to it is a small slot where a you can access the fly wheel. On the SD600 the flywheel access is on the top of the camera, behind the flash. On the SD13oo the slot was on the bottom opposite the battery access hatch. In each case it is a slot next to the motor. I used the tooth pick from a swiss army knife to turn the fly wheel which is mounted sideways in the slot and shaped like a small propeller. 4) Turn the flywheel many times. The lens should begin to move very slowly. You will only notice the lens moving after you have turned the flywheel dozens of times. If you don't notice it moving, try the other direction. 5) One you have given the flywheel a few turns, the gear jam that has created the lens error has probably been fixed. However, for best results, continue to turn the flywheel until the lens is fully extended or retracted (depending on the position it was stuck in). 6) Try the power button. The lens should be working now. This method has fixed every lens error I have ever ha
