Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera

Ordinarily that would be acceptable, you would just send it back to Canon and get a new one. But because Canon refuses to admit this is a problem and Canon will not fix it for free, this problem becomes a fatal one. So when you buy one of these cameras I think you should be aware of the risks involved. That is why I posted all these links.I understand why Canon is not admitting this problem and will not fix it. It takes a technician a lot of work to completely disassemble the camera. Also probably the percentage of cases is high enough that it would cost them a lot of money to send out a free camera for all the e18 errors. Finally it costs Canon a lot of money to reengineer the lens drive mechanism to fix the flaw. It is easier and cheaper for them to alienate a certain percentage of customers

I did have problems arise with the A70, A75, and A80, but those occurred after their one year warranty periods expired. I thought if I did have a problem that was not due to negligence during lens error the warranty period, I would be okay. But perhaps not?I purchased a Canon SX10 back in October 08. Since that time, I have taken excellent care of the camera, always cleaning dust and fingerprints off the lens, body, and LCD after use and storing the camera in a well padded case. I also do not think I have used the camera excessively. I have canon sx10 lens taken about 2000 shots since October. I have taken very well care of this camera. It is the most expensive camera I have owned and I have treated it like gold. The camera still physically appears in brand new condition without scratches or blemishes. It has never been dropped or damaged in anyway.Well, during July, I started experiencing an occasional problem where the camera would lock up and state 'Lens error, restart camera'. The camera would restart itself after pressing the power button a couple of times and then it would operate normally. However, the frequency of this error started increasing during the month of August. At first, it only happened when I composed my shots vertically while zooming in. But then the error started happening while zooming in when the camera was horizontal too. It soon got to the point where it would freeze up even if I wasn't zooming.Another problem arose during this time. I normally store the LCD screen flipped toward the camera to protect the screen and use the view finder. But occasionally, I like to use the LCD to take pictures at difficult an

Share this conversation Expert: Russell A. replied5 years ago. Hi,Lens errors are a common problem. Dirt can get into the gears or the lens can become misaligned from being carried in pockets, purses or from impact. With newer cameras I am usually hesitant to suggest these options since they include some more extreme procedures that may cause further damage if not done correctly, but, since yours has been dropped, and there is no chance of warranty repair, they may save you an expensive repair bill. The two links below give step by step DIY instructions on troubleshooting and attempting to fix this problem. You can skip the dirt and sand steps. A Canon camera is used to demonstrate these procedures but, the lens structure of these compact cameras is the same so the examples do apply to this unit. These procedures are effective about 60% of the time. Click on or copy and paste the links into your browser.
