The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage. It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right too

About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok. When I got home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera" The lens doesn't http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/11755/what-should-i-do-about-canon-powershot-lens-error-restart-camera even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even. If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. I have written a blog post about some things that you can do to try to cor

Ensure batteries are fully charged2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand or other dirt etc3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 2 minutes and refitIf no luck then we have to lens error restart try some things that could possibly result in damaging your camera so should only be tried if happy to take that risk...5. Try thumping the camera into your other hand, by thumping into your hand you are trying to jar the mechanism loose, by using your hand you will hopefully not do it too hard or it will hurt. You may need to do this a dozen or so times in different places to work. I have found the flat of the camera bottom into the flat of your hand best..6. If the lens is stuck in the out position then remove the batteries and try twisting the lens first one way then the other, do not apply excessive force when doing this or you can break gears, you are trying to reposition not force... Likewise if the lens looks like it is crooked you can try pushing it back into position. This has a higher chance of doing more harm than the thump so please be careful...7. Dismantle the camera, not for the faint hearted, you need to dismantle the lens assembly into the main body of the cameraIf no luck then only other option is a serviceman I'm afraid, be sure to get a quotes as camera repairs can be uneconomical Neil, Camera and Video Technician Category: Camera and Video Satisfied Customers: 3722 Experience:NZCE Electronics a

I think they called these an Ultra Zoom or something at the time. 20x optical zoom, non-removable lens. Looks a bit like a ¾ size DSLR. Recently it has been giving a message "Lens error – please restart camera". It happens when I zoom, often as soon as I touch the zoom, but sometimes I can creep it part way before it happens. If left for a while the problem can go away so I can zoom the full range, but sooner or later it comes back again. No sign of dirt or anything in the lens mechanism but it probably wouldn't be visible anyway. It's not crunching like it has sand in it at least. Thought I would try the Whirlpool route first as most shops charge even to look at it. Any ideas what I can do? Is there a full restart sequence to reset the camera (as opposed to pulling the batteries)? If you are using rechargeable ones and they are a bit tired you could maybe get errors like this. Anyway simplest fix I can think of is fresh batteries. If it's anything serious it's probably not worth fixing. It could be the batteries, built up dust or even the little zoom motors starting to break down. Probably wouldn't be worth fixing and I don't think anyone could do it for you anyway.
