question Anybody can answer The best answers are voted up and rise to the top Problem with installing Steam on Ubuntu 15.04+ up vote 75 down vote favorite 50 Actually I have installed the new Ubuntu 15.04 64bit, and when I'm trying to install Steam on it, there is a problem. In fact I have downloaded the deb package from steam website, installed it libgl error: failed to load driver: swrast centos and when I start it nothing happens. There was a post with a similar topichttps://www.centos.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=4130&p=20321&hilit=swrast#p20321but in my case 'glxinfo' does not complain.In my ' /var/log/Xorg.0.log' there was no mention of 'swrast'.Is it perhaps necessary to reinstall swrast?If yes, which package would i have to install? They also overwrite other files belonging to other packages (mesa* xorg*?) so other things may also break them when CentOS packages are updated. This is why ELRepo repackage the nvidia .run files as proper CentOS yum packages and remove the file overwrites. CentOS 5 dies in March 2017 - migrate soon!Full time Geek, part time moderator. and this is the first time I have attempt to play games on Steam in Linux. I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 in my machine. Here is what I have done so far:Installed the Nvidia ppa (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa) based upon a thread I found out there on the webs and then installed Nvidia 358 (sudo apt-get install nvidia-358 nvidia-settings). I then downloaded the Steam .dep package from the Steam site and installed, the install ran smooth. Launched the Steam client and then downloaded Insurgency and started the game. The game started and I was able to join a server, but the actual game never started after the map was downloaded, I believe it froze. I then minimized the game window and happened to notice an OpenGL error.I researched all over and tried many steps. At some point during my troubleshooting I broke something because now Steam doesn't launch at all. I've tried everything from removing Steam and the Nvidia driver and reinstalling everything and even upgraded the driver to 361. Its running Steam games thereafter (and now Steam altogether since it is no longer launching) that seems to be the major issue.
