I've been using a SONY laptop with Windows 8 for a few months now and there weren't any problems with my photography work until I upgraded from LR4 to LR5 last week--and there's my problem. I simply can't make the usual connection to Flickr no matter how hard I try. I called Adobe this morning (it takes a 15-20 minute hold, but they do respond) and we tried EVERYTHING for half hour and still couldn't get the LR5-Flickr connection. The frustrated techie, who knew what she was doing, told me the problem is not with Lightroom 5, or Windows 8 (as I thought)--but with Flickr. There's nothing you can do except wait for Yahoo (owner of Flickr) to fix the issue. It seems the fix usually only takes a few hours to a few days.
