an Access database on our network which about 2-3 of us use concurrently. This is not a problem for us. One person cannot access it because of a, "Could Not "open databases by using record-level locking" Lock File" error. The rest of us do not have this problem. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? Is the problem in the person's security or configuration of Access or in the database? Thanks. dfriend846, Sep 13, 2005 #1 Sponsor dfriend846 Thread Starter Joined: Aug 11, 2005 Messages: 199 Here's an answer to the above problem: The ms access lock file users who had problems opening Access had read only rights for the network folder containing the database. If they were the first (only?) user then there was no problem but if they logged on as a multiple user the program could not create a lock file since they did not have write priveleges. When changed to allow write priveleges the problem went away. dfriend846, Oct 2, 2005 #2 Adeyan Joined: Jan 4, 2007 Messages: 9 Thanks, exactly what i was looking for Adeyan, Jan 4, 2007 #3 glisando Joined: Jun 1, 2007 Messages: 15 I am having the same problem in my workplace too. What if that particular user is not supposed to do any editing of the data, and I end up giving him 'WRITE' privellages? Could it be something to do with the registry settings of the user's notebook/PC? I manage

It is on a network file server and is accessed via network shares. There is a current group of users who have been successfully accessing it simultaneously; some using Windows 2000 Pro/Office 2000 and some using Windows XP Pro/Office 2003. I am now adding 2 new users, 1 2000 Pro/Offc 2000 + 1 https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/24246023/How-do-I-fix-Microsoft-Access-'Cannot-Lock-File'-error.html XP Pro/Offc 2003, who each get the 'cannot lock file' message if anyone of the original group is using the database, otherwise they can access the file. Further if either of the 2 new users log on first, any of the original users can use the database but only as read-only. Both original and new users all have the same NTFS permissions to the database and folders on the network. Any help to solve this will be most appreciated. 0 Question by:WoodstockIT Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 77 Best Solution bypeter57r Consider it like this. Sat, 10/02/2010 - 18:39| jack5465 This error occurs when the .ldb file is not automatically deleted when the lock file user closes MS Access. In theory, the .ldb file should automatically get created when user connects to the database and automatically get deleted when user stops using the database. The way to fix this problem is to delete the .ldb file. The .ldb file will be in the same folder as the database itself. If the “File in Use” error is received when trying to delete the .ldb file, use the following could not lock steps to delete the file Ask the Domain Admin (System Admin) to kill all the sessions related with that .ldb file. Then ask the Domain Admin to (System Admin) delete the .ldb file. How to prevent this error? Make sure the user that need to access the database have all modify, read and execute, read and write rights for the current folder. If you need users to limit them so that they cannot write to the database, set the permissions for the database file itself, not the folder it is in. This is because the .ldb file is created in the same folder as the database and users have to have rights in order create .ldb file, write to it and delete the file. | Tags: Tech, Access, Could not Lock File, Database, MS Access Share Related Articles Find out Today's Most Searched Terms on Google Most Searched Things On Google 2010-2011 Reducing Drupal Comment Spam and Blog Spam Drupal Captcha Module; Math and Image Captcha Top Ten Best Antispam Drupal Modules Increase your Search Engine Ranking and Drive more Traffic to your Website Save YouTube Video in MP4 and FLV Format How To Remove Google Buzz Link From Gmail View the discussion thread. Users can access the db with no errors when the other 3 admins are not running the file. But once the admins are running the db, the 2 users cannot access even from the FE. If I distribute the FE to users on their local computers and then use a VPN service to enable access to the BE on a server, does this automatically solve this problem? I'm not clear if the BE has built in intelligence to lock out the file when it's in use, when another user tries to access it and do some changes.
