07 December 2005 - 10:20 PM As of yesterday evening I've been having problems viewing any folders on my ftp server. I'm using Serv-U FTP v6.1.0.5 and SmartFTP Client v1.5.991 (recently change ftp to passive mode upgraded both). I'm able to login to the server, but I always stall at a certain point and I'm not sure why. I've inluded the log below: SmartFTP v1.5.991.22 Resolving host name "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" Connecting to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Port: 21 Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. 220 Serv-U FTP Server v6.1 for WinSock ready... I've made sure to use ACTIVE mode, and I've unchecked all of the boxes for Command Listings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Whether to use active or passive mode depends to both the server and client configuration (i.e. if one / both is / are behind a firewall / router). In your case, you should connect in passive mode (which is the default and most common nowadays). If that does not work either, you should reconfigu

This resuletd in the server using different ports then port 21, and my firewall stopped this. Changed the FTP server to only use passive mode, and then port 21 is used, and my firewall was no longer a problem. trying a series of other attempted fixes, like clearing out the existing http://klevster.com/ logs from: %SystemRoot%\System32\Winevt\Logs, as well as making sure the permissions on the folder were ok. There was a suggestion to use Process Monitor(procmon), so I tried starting the service, worked https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/robert_mcmurray/2013/05/24/a-quick-discussion-of-active-and-passive-ftp-connections/ out what PID it was then filtered the view by that PID.  I saw the PID was attempting to traverse a set of Registry Keys which were showing as mode data NOT FOUND. The full key was: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\EventLog I checked the registry and this contained a set of Keys for Application, Security and System. For me these then only contained an entry for Retention. Which got me thinking, does this even need to be here? I deleted the Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\EventLog then tried to start the Windows Event Log service mode data connection and BAM! worked straight up No comments event log, event log service, event viewer, eventlog, windows, windows event log service Phone Scammers and Internet Security July 4, 2015 admin Opinion With scamming on the rise, people being fleeced of their savings and the phone calls from ‘Telstra' and ‘Microsoft' more numerous than ever, I thought it was time for myself to spread the gospel of how to deal with all of this… It's not iron clad, but there are some very simple common sense rules to follow and you won't have to worry if you've shared your personal details with the wrong person. I've recently seen a lot of bullshit safety information being shared around on social media, this is not bullshit, please please if you find any of this useful to you, please share it. Telstra, Microsoft, et al. NEVER call you… Never…. Even they do, it's often a call that's unsolicited to begin with, as soon as they mention who they are calling from, hang up, hang up immediately.

FTP Connections ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ robmcmMay 24, 20133 0 0 0 I get a lot of questions about Active versus Passive FTP Connections, specifically when people are configuring their FTP firewall settings as described in my articles like Configuring FTP Firewall Settings in IIS and FTP Firewall Support, and I get related questions when people are trying to figure out why they can't use the command-line FTP.EXE utility that ships with Windows over the Internet. With all of this in mind, I thought that I would put together a quick blog that explains Active and Passive FTP connections and why those matter when you are connecting to an FTP server over the Internet. Here is the briefest description that I can think of to describe the different between Active and Passive FTP: When you are using Active FTP, your FTP client determines how your data connections will work. When you are using Passive FTP, your FTP server determines how your data connections will work. That sums up the whole concept into two bullet points. Unfortunately, neither of those bullet points are the least bit significant to you if you don't understand what they actually mean, so I will describe them in detail below. How Active FTP Works The following output shows the communication between an FTP client and FTP server using Active FTP to retrieve a simple directory listing, and I manually color-coded the output so that the client and server's responses would be a little easier to see: OPEN ftp.contoso.com Resolving ftp.contoso.com...
