project is used to link multiple projects on project server. All sub-projects are linked to a milestone schedule. The milestone schedule only has milestone tasks that have predecessors using tasks from the

sub-projects. My problem is that sometimes my sub-projects get error messages that indicate a circular reference. There is no indication of what task is causing the circular reference. I get the error message right when I open up the sub-project on project server. It gets the error when it is trying to link to external projects. The error message says 'You are trying to link a task to another task that has a series of task links back to the first task. You cannot do this because it would create a circular task relationship with other tasks'. How do you determine what tasks are causing this? What is the best practice for preventing and fixing this? This is why most of us strongly recommend that you never link summary tasks to anything. To determine if this is a likely cause, try the following: Open your master project, then completely expand all subprojects and all summary tasks. Display the Gantt Chart view and then apply the Entry table, if needed. Drag the split bar to the right side of the Resource Names column. Insert a new column in MSP copy all predeccessor column value in the new custom text field(say Text1_Pred) now bulk delete all values in predeccessor column Now copy back all the value from Text1_Pred into Predeccessor Column again it would start giving error with "Task ID No" as pasting error for circular reference. Note TaskId. It give you option to ignore problem or continue without problem or cancel Choose NO ("continue without problem ") option to remove. Hope it will someone else with the problem.
