ERROR 2006 (HY000): MySQL server has gone away –Simon East Oct 6 '14 at 0:40 For people getting here from Google: If changing the max_allowed_packet size or wait_timeout amount doesn't fix it, check your memory usage. I was getting the same error and it was being caused by my server running out of memory. I added a 1GB swap file and that fixed it. –Pikamander2 Sep 19 at 23:52 1 @Pikamander2 thanks for the hint! –ihsan Sep 26 at 9:10 add a comment| 13 Answers 13 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted It may be easier to check if the connection and re-establish it if needed. See PHP:mysqli_ping for info on that. share|improve this answer edited May 14 '15 at 14:46 cgaldiolo 525610 answered Oct 29 '11 at 23:15 Niet the Dark Absol 208k35240371 Good point, if you have a process that is intermittent then its better to release your connection so you don't used up all the connections. Rebuilding the connection is generally cheap. +1 –Yzmir Ramirez Nov 3 '11 at 0:48 add a comment| up vote 178 down vote I've encountered this a number of times and I've normally found the answer to be a very low default setting of max_allowed_packet. Raising it in /etc/my.cnf (under [mysqld]) to 8 or 16M usually fixes it. [mysqld] max_allowed_packet=16M Note: This can be set on your server as it's running. Use set global max_allowed_packet=104857600. This sets it to 100MB. share|impr

When i try to import a sql file, either through MySQL Query Browser or PHPMyAdmin,i get the following error. Error 2006: MySQL Server has gone away. The size of the file is 54,528 KB. In C:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.1.30\my.ini , i set the max_allowed_packet to 100M in [mysqldump] and [wampmysqld]. I couldnt find wait_timeout variable in my.ini. Any way to fix this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1980004/2006-mysql-server-has-gone-away-error-in-wamp problem ?. For your reference, i have given below the contents of my.ini file. # Example MySQL config file for medium systems. # # This is for a system with little memory (32M - 64M) where MySQL plays # an important part, or systems up to 128M where MySQL is used together with # other programs (such as a web server) # # You can copy this file to # /etc/my.cnf to set global options, # mysql-data-dir/my.cnf to set server-specific options (in this # installation this directory is C:\mysql\data) or # ~/.my.cnf to set user-specific options. # # In this file, you can use all long options that a program supports. # If you want to know which options a program supports, run the program # with the "--help" option. # The following options will be passed to all MySQL clients [client] #password = your_password port = 3306 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock # Here follows entries for some specific programs # The MySQL server [wampmysqld] port = 3306 socket = /tmp/mysql.sock skip-locking key_buffer = 16M max_allowed_packet = 100M table_cache = 64 sort_buffer_size = 512K net_buffer_length = 8K read_buffer_size = 256K read_rnd_buffer_size = 512K myisam_sort_buffer_size = 8M basedir=c:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.1.30 log-error=c:/wamp/logs/mysql.log datadir=c:/wamp/bin/mysql/mysql5.1.30/data # Don't listen on a TCP/IP po

But on my local machine every query gives the "MySQL Server has gone away". I'm good with drupal (definitely not a n00b) but not so good with servers so I have very little clue as to what mysql server has could be causing this. I've read the MySQL docs on the error without enlightenment, read all the drupal references to it. No help there. I believe I have the usenames and passwords set-up right because drupal tries to display the front page but in doing so I'm getting 50-60 of these errors, apparently one for every attempted MySQL query.
