by: Rhana Modified on: Thu, 28 Jul, 2016 at 3:33 PM We believe that most of the time this issue is caused by malware on your computer. The malware is modifying Chrome to prevent you from installing any extensions, including AdBlock. Here are two suggestions. Try them in order, proceeding to the next step only if you're still getting the error. 1. Edit your Hosts file You'll be restarting your computer, so bookmark this page to make it easy to come back to (or print the instructions before you begin). Windows: Type the following text into the Windows Search bar and press Enter: %WinDir%\System32\Drivers\EtcA File Explorer window will open, showing the contents of the Etc folder. Make a backup of the Hosts file for safety: Right-click Hosts and select Copy. Then right-click on an empty part of the folder window and select Paste. Right-click Hosts again and select Open with. In the list of applications that appears, select Notepad. Find the line that looks like this: 127.0.0.1 clients2.google.com If that line isn't in the Hosts file, just close the Notepad window without saving the file. Skip to 2. Reinstall Chrome, below. Select that line and press Delete. Press Ctrl+S to save the file. Close the Notepad window. Restart your computer. Reinstall AdBlock. OS X: Open the Utilities folder and double-click Terminal. Type the following text and press Return: sudo nano /etc/hosts Enter your admin password when prompted. Don't worry if the cursor doesn't move as you type; this is normal. Find the line that looks like this: 127.0.0.1 clients2.google.com If that line isn't in the hosts file, just press Control+X, then type No to close the editor window without saving the file. Skip to 2. Reinstall Chrome, below. Use the cursor keys to position the cursor at the end of that line and press Delete until the entire line is deleted. Press Control+O to save the file, then press Control+X to exit the editor. Restart your computer. Reinstall AdBlock. 2. Reinstall Chrome Warning: This step will completely erase your bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, and Chrome settings on your computer. Before you proceed, be sure to turn on Google Chrome sync and synchronize everything through your Google account! Uninstall Chrome. Be sure to check Also delete your browsing data. Reinstall Chrome.
