I'm making SSH connections to it from network error connection refused putty cisco my PC via Putty. The problem is, sometimes I'm able to login seamlessly. However, sometimes it gives me an error like this: Network error: Connection refused. Then, I dont't change anything, try to login a few times more, wait a while and try again. Sometimes I can log in, sometimes I cannot. It seems pretty random to me. What can I do to solve this? Edit: And Sometimes, Putty gives Network error: Software caused connection abort error after displaying login as: text. I had PuTTY up & running untill I did a reinstall of Fedora13. I can ping 192.168.1.163 fine. SELinux is disabled. Firewall is default (SSH allowed on p22). I have just disabled the firewall with same result) PuTTY reports: =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= PuTTY log 2010.07.20 16:23:52 =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~= Event Log: Writing new network error connection session log (SSH raw data mode) to file: C:\Users\wim\Desktop\putty.log Event Log: Looking up host "192.168.1.163" Event Log: Connecting to 192.168.1.163 port 22 Event Log: Failed to connect to 192.168.1.163: Network error: Connection timed out Event Log: Network error: Connection timed out Does anyone have a clue? To confuse the matters (as I can Ping 192.168.1.163 normally) see below. Any input greatly appreciated. this THREAD seems to have a short and a longer version (5 replies). It is solved. However I can't seem to edit the correct thread. Solution was given by Scot35276: sshd was not running. Thankyou Scott. Another possibility is that the firewall is blocking access (check the "trusted services" list). jpollard View Public Profile Find all posts by jpollard #3 28th July 2010, 03:19 PM scott32746 Offline Registered User Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Lake Mary, Florida Age: 52 Posts: 1,088 Re: Pink OK but PuTTY gets connection refused Hello, Check the logs on the server $ md

OpenSSH server is installed and running (ssh -v localhost connects locally in the guest machine). Can SSH to external servers (no outbound Windows firewall rule blocking port 22) Can ping the IP of the guest (192.168.56.101) Problem Using PuTTY to SSH to the IP of the guest OS (192.168.56.101), PuTTY returns almost immediately with Network error: connection refused How can I diagnose & resolve this issue? ssh virtualbox share|improve this question asked Sep 25 '12 at 0:58 Eric J. 6522923 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote accepted Are you sure the IP is for the guest OS. I had the same problem and it turned out that the IP I had been using all along, the 192.168.56.101 was actually the Windows interface IP and the host OS IP was 192.168.56.103. You can verify by doing ipconfig / ifconfig on both. NOTE: I had also setup a static IP which it turns out I didn't need at all. In case you try from the start I found this tutorial to be better. share|improve this answer edited Nov 3 '12 at 21:14 answered Nov 3 '12 at 20:46 Saad Farooq 1777 5 +1, The VirtualBox default is to create a guest whose virtual network adapter is NAT'ed through VirtualBox itself. Therefore such a guest would be able to SSH out, and would be able to SSH itself, but it would not be able to receive SSH connections until Port Forwarding rules were created in VirtualBox. –Gord Thompson Mar 17 '13 at 12:30 +1 After 1h of Google-mess, finally! I thought the .101 was the guest not the host! –5chdn Jul 8 '14 at 17:33 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote You should check that your guest OS firewall is not blocking incoming connections on port 22. share|improve
