HP Officejet Pro 8000 CB092A inkjet printer. Per the HPLIP info page, I sane network scanner determined that a pre-built installer would not work for Fedora 10. Therefore, I attempted to use the manual build/install procedure outlined ubuntu add network scanner on the HPLIP info page. The process was unsuccessful. I would appreciate any help as to what went wrong and how to fix it. The install session went as follows: 1. Logged in as Administrator (not root) 2. Copied driver tarball hplip-3.11.5.tar.gz to /home/admin/Download

3. $cd Download 4. $tar xvfz hplip-3.11.5.tar.gz which created a new subdirectory hplip-3.11.5. So far proceeding along as described per the instructions. 5. $cd hplip-3.11.5 6. Run the configure script $ ./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/cups/model/HP --prefix=/usr --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --disable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --enable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-build This resulted in many "checking for ........" statements, with the final line being "configure: error: cannot find net/ucd-snmp support (or --disable-network-build)". Two new files were created: config.log and libtool(executable). There was no make file, so, of course, a make command was unsuccessful. HP Deskjet F2483. The printer works fine but am having issues getting the scanner to work. Following instructions I found thanks to Google, this is what my shell looks like: sh-4.0$ sane-find-scanner # sane-find-scanner will now attempt sane-pixma to detect your scanner. If the # result is different from what you expected, first sane-find-scanner make sure your # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected

Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage. # Not checking for parallel port scanners. # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports # can't be detected by this program. # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as # necessary. sh-4.0$ scanimage http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-248890.html -L No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages). sh-4.0$ Both xsane and skanlite report not finding the device. I ask for assist please smr5420th July 2010, 11:28 PMOne possible guess. Do you have hplip installed? (I think so, if you have scanimage, but I'm not positive.) If that's the case, you can try to reinstall the printer/scanner with hp-setup -i (if it's a networked printer/scanner) or hp-setup -i (with nothing, and then you can choose 0 for a USB scanner). Now....if this doesn't work, then there may still be a problem with Fedora's hplip--I know that on a few recent installs, I've found that it simply doesn't work properly. In that case, you can uninstall it, and install from hplip's website. A few folks besides myself have found that to be the case--Fedora's hplip wouldn't work, but installing from hplip's source did work. If you choose that route, I recommend the manual install. http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/fedora_core.html Even though it only mentions Fedora 8 and 9, the instructions have been found to work with F13. Hopefully, though, it won't be necessary. Fedora's hplip isn't *always* broken, just sometimes. :) Jamwa22

up SANE Step 1: Installing sane Step 2: Test your scanner Manual Scanner Installation Enable the back-end Installing your USB scanner Installing your SCSI, Parallel or Proprietary Port Scanner Installing Network Scanners Specific Scanners HP Scanners Brother Scanners https://help.ubuntu.com/community/sane Samsung Scanners SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) is the linux way of scanning. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=120546 sane supports a great many scanners, and the community around SANE adds support for more scanners all the time. By and large, most supported scanners are plug and play simple (plug them in and your ready to scan). However, some scanners will require manual installation. About this tutorial This tutorial will walk you through the network scanner basic set up of sane with plug and play scanners. Assumptions We make the following assumptions in this tutorial (you will need to adjust these to fit your situation) This set up assumes that we are on a small home or office network and are behind a firewall. Our LAN is an IP4 network on subnet 192.168.0.0/24 (192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255) Our Ubuntu box is 192.168.0.23 Our USB scanner configure error cannot is located at libusb:001:003 Our SCSI scanner is at /dev/sg1 Our network scanner is at 192.168.0.15 Our scanner uses the example backend (example-backend) Setting up SANE Step 1: Installing sane Sane should be installed as a base package in Ubuntu 11.04 and later. You can run the following command to install it (if it's already installed, it will do nothing): apt-get install sane sane-utils libsane-extras xsaneThis will also install the xsane front end. Note that some scanners will require other packages to be installed. Those are covered in the scanner-specific pages. Step 2: Test your scanner Run following command to test your scanner: Applications > Graphics > XSaneYou should see a dialog for scanning from your scanner. If SANE says that it can't find the scanner, you will need to do a manual installation. Manual Scanner Installation Most of the time, the back-end for your scanner will be enabled by default. For some scanners, you will need to enable it manually. This usually involves enabling the back-end, and then adding your scanner to it. Enable the back-end Start by checking [http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html] to make sure your scanner is supported and to see what back-end your scanner uses. Some backends need to be

So I have to restart with it plugged in to get it to work. I have tried "sudo rc.d restart cups" but it doesn't work. I need to do a complete restart. EDIT: Update! I installed hpoj and it detects my printer now. Now the only problem is that it keeps saying "Low on ink" when it really isn't. It prints fine under windows. Another thing is xsane won't use it... it uses my laptop camera.I'm having lots of problems getting my printer to scan/print in Arch Linux. It worked perfectly fine under Linux Mint. So I installed sane, xsane, and hplip from pacman. When I type hp-setup, it can not find the ppd for my printer (Hp officejet j4580 all-in-one). This is really weird since it is supported (it's in their printer list) and it worked completely fine under linux mint. So I selected a similar printer, and clicked add printer. It says I am not in the "sys" group. I do "sudo gpasswd -a draucia sys" and try again but same error. I even tried as root... didn't work. I tried downloading the tarball and doing:./configure --with-hpppddir=/usr/share/ppd/HP --libdir=/usr/lib64 --prefix=/usr --enable-qt4 --enable-doc-build --enable-cups-ppd-install --disable-foomatic-drv-install --disable-foomatic-ppd-install --disable-hpijs-install --disable-policykit --disable-cups-drv-install --enable-hpcups-install --enable-network-build --enable-dbus-build --enable-scan-build --enable-fax-buildBut it says:checking for python extension module directory... ${exec_prefix}/lib/python3.2/site-packageschecking for path to Python.h... File "", line 1 from distutils.sysconfig import get_python_inc; print get_python_inc(); ^SyntaxError: invalid synt
