Nikon D90 Error Message Cha
favorite I have a Nikon D90 camera body and today I started getting a CHA error on the display on the top of the body that shows f-stop and other settings. Looking around, I do not find a definition for exactly what this means, only suggestions like remove the battery and memory card and reseat them to make it go away, but many say it returns later. What exactly does CHA mean and how should one resolve it more definitively? battery nikon-d90 memory-card error share|improve this
Nikon D90 Cha Error Code
question asked Oct 1 '13 at 23:37 WilliamKF 80031432 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted The D90 uses CHA as a generic 'card error' condition if a problem occurs while the card is in use. If the card works at all or has been working then it's unlikely to be a formatting issue. This could just be a case of a poor connection and cleaning the contacts on the card and reseating everything may solve it. If it has been working then there could be a problem with the card in which case you should be able to test it in a desktop machine and retire/replace it if necessary. There is also an issue I've had with the D90 and larger memory cards (over 8gb) where it incorrectly calculates 'checksums' used to determine if there is a problem (although it writes them correctly) when the value isn't what it expects then you'll get a CHA message. As a temporary resolution you can access the card in a reader and copy & remove the last written file but if this is your issue then the problem will return at some point. I've been in touch with Nikon about it but without being able to reproduce the issue at will Nikon have not been helpful. The solution I ended up with was just to use multiple cards, which is no great hardship. share|improve this answer answered Oct 2 '13 at 11:59 James Snell 7,3681330 add a comment| u

message happen again and more times than not the consensus is that a new camera is needed (not the card, not the lens). Apparently "evidence" of this nikon d300 cha error is that one's forced to remove and then put back the battery just to get the camera functioning again (everything freezes to the extent that you can't even turn the camera off, if you don't do this)...a Nikon rep told someone that that http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/43094/what-does-cha-mean-on-nikon-d-90 usually means it's a problem inside the camera itself. Why the manual suggests it's the card is beyond me.I'll contact Nikon (ugh) but meanwhile if anyone has any new advice (besides replacing the card and taking the battery out and putting it back in) - or if you've heard anything new about what might be the true culprit - please do share. If I find anything out I'll share as well.Thank you! DIS Veteran Joined: Apr 14, 2008 Messages: 3,607 I've received this error twice (in a row), everything locks up and won't work. The only thing that will get rid of it is taking the battery out and putting it back in. http://www.disboards.com/threads/nikon-d90-err-cha-help.1974891/ I did a quick google search and the problem seems to range from memory card problem to http://photodoto.com/d90-err-mystery-solved/ fatal camera problem. Anyone know what the problem could be? I've owned this camera 4days, well within the time to take it back. Am I better off doing that then trying to figure it out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. wenrob, Oct 6, 2008 #1 YEKCIM DIS Veteran Joined: Apr 25, 2005 Messages: 3,033 wenrob said: ↑ I've received this error twice (in a row), everything nikon d90 locks up and won't work. I would also suggest you call Nikon Service (800) 645-6689 and discuss it with them. Return and exchange might be a good move if you can't pin the issue down and resolve it quickly. ~Ed YEKCIM, Oct 6, 2008 #2 wenrob DIS Veteran Joined: Apr 14, 2008 Messages: 3,607 DH suggested that I try a different memory card and so far I can't repeat the error so that may be it. It seems hard to slide the card in and out of the camera, almost like it sticks. I'm thinking I may have damaged the card pulling it in and out last night doing test shots. However the first time I got the error it was just a blinking error and the green light flashing which freaked me out and prompted this post, lol. Thank you for the help and the number I'm going to give them a call just in case. wenrob, Oct 6, 2008 #3 Advertisement Log in or Sign up to hide this advert. TweetEmailI was having intermittent trouble with my new D90 recently. The dreaded blinking "ERR" in the LCD. My symptoms included: wouldn't focus, shutter would trip but no image recorded, ERR light. The only way to clear it was to remove the battery. The thing is that it would only happen once in a while so, at first, I didn't think too much about it. It got bad enough though that I decided I had a bad copy and was about to send it back for a replacement when… I noticed that the LCD would flickr when I wiggled the lens. The solution? I removed the lens, wiped down the contacts and the mounting ring, and reattached it. Problem solved. I feel a little sheepish admitting how lame/lazy I am for not checking that in the first place. Lessons learned? I'm an idiot. Plus, check the lens mount if you're getting weird intermittent mechanical problems with your DSLR. I mean, it's not like it said, "Error, your lens contacts are dirty. Please remove the lens and clean the little brass bits on the bottom." It said Err90. And there's nothing in the manual to explain what that means. Canon has almost the identical error, although for I vaguely recall that theirs is Err30… http://photodoto.com/ John Watson Thanks for the vote of confidence. :-) Conner Downey I like how you said "flickr" instead of flicker. http://photodoto.com/ John Watson Haha!
