Note that this combination has worked before. The lens is http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/54433/fee-error-using-nikon-85mm1-8-with-nikon-d80-camera set to f/22, with the aperture ring locked. When I put it on the camera the display shows 'fEE', which is supposed to be "Lens aperture ring is not set to minimum aperture" (which, it is). The DX 35mm lens works fine.I also have a d90 body- and the 50mm lens works fine on that, as-is. I don't have any other "D" lenses laying nikon d90 around.Any other ideas? How does this setting get communicated to the camera for a D lens? is it electronic, or mechanical? Nothing LOOKS wrong in the camera lens mount area. The firmware has been updated to 1.01, and that didn't help.Thanks,-jamie Reply to thread Reply with quote Complain Rod Phifer • Forum Member • Posts: 97 Re: fEE Error on nikon d7000, aperture ring is already locked In reply to jamiesmithnc • Feb 19, 2011 Have you tried cleaning the fee error nikon metal contacts on the lenses with a cloth? Perhaps it is not quite set properly where it is.Also . . . wipe all metal contacts with a soft cloth . . . the new camera will be shipped with a protective coating on the metal contacts and their may be some film residue there preventing proper contact.Regards, Van Griff Van Griff's gear list:Van Griff's gear list Nikon D700 Nikon D7000 Nikon AF-S Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF Nikon AF Nikkor 105mm f/2D DC Nikon AF Nikkor 135mm f/2D DC +28 more Reply Reply with quote Complain jamiesmithnc OP • New Member • Posts: 5 Re: fEE Error on nikon d7000, aperture ring is already locked In reply to Van Griff • Feb 19, 2011 I tried cleaning the contacts (on both the body & the lens), and futzing with

This is different than the 'G' series which do not have that and are completely electronically controlled. On mechanical cameras, the f/stop is set from the lens itself. You adjust the f/stop on the lens, and then when you shoot the photo, the body closes the aperture to the appropriate setting on the lens. This is done mechanically. With a camera that doesn't have the capability to use the mechanical nature of the lens (the higher end professional bodies do and can use AI lenses with some restrictions), the lens needs to be set in its most stopped down position to work. This allows the lens to be closed as far as it is capable when the aperture is controlled on the body rather than the lens. So, yes, your lens does need to be set to its minimum aperture. In the case of the 85mm f/1.8, this is f/16. There is a small switch that you can flip that will lock the camera lens at its minimum aperture. You will need to set it to its minimum aperture (in red-orange) and the flip the switch so that it is also
